In the study of International Relations, western states have been typically understood as the seat of legitimate public authority where sovereignty discourses are centred on state power. However, critical IR scholars are beginning to draw attention to the state as performatively enacted. From this perspective, state sovereignty is not a fixed characteristic of the state, but instead must be constantly re/produced through interactions between the state and the populace. This thesis investigates this performative understanding of states through analyzing the Wet'suwet'en land occupation at Unist'ot'en Village and Gidimt'en Access Checkpoint in northwestern British Columbia, Canada. This project finds that Indigenous Nations tended to appeal to tradition, Indigenous law, and the landed requirement of Indigenous sovereignty; while the Canadian state tended to focus on maintaining the artificial boundaries between rights, resistance, and contemporary Indigenous governance which has marked Canada's political approach to Indigenous rights.

Theories of performativity have garnered considerable attention within the social sciences and humanities over the past two decades. At the same time, there has also been a growing recognition that the social production of space is fundamental to assertions of political authority and the practices of everyday life. However, comparatively little scholarship has explored the full implications that arise from the confluence of these two streams of social and political thought. This is the first book-length, edited collection devoted explicitly to showcasing geographical scholarship on the spatial politics of performativity. It offers a timely intervention within the field of critical human geography by exploring the performativity of political spaces and the spatiality of performative politics. Through a series of geographical case studies, the contributors to this volume consider the ways in which a performative conception of the "political" might reshape our understanding of sovereignty, political subjectification, and the production of social space. The book deeply analyses the bilateral relations between Switzerland and the European Union and their effect on the former's sovereignty in the context of Europeanisation. This touches on philosophical debates on the complexity of sovereignty. What sovereignty is at stake when talking about Swiss-EU relations? This issue not only faces the elusiveness of sovereignty as a concept, but also the proliferation of hypocrisy on its presence within states. The book encounters the deconstructionist hypothesis stating that there is nothing to worry about but the belief there is something to worry about. Derrida’s deconstruction of sovereignty allows indeed one to grasp the fictional essence of sovereignty based on the metaphysics of presence. The presence of self-positing sovereign ipseity is fictional since absent in the present, but spectrally present in the belief of its presence to come. Sovereignty is a matter of credibility, or the credible promise of a normative statement to come. Hence, the book challenges the realist/neorealist argument stating that states are credibly sovereign until proven otherwise and explains that the debate on state sovereignty calls for the unveiling of this hypocritical epistemology cunningly disguised as an objective presence. Swiss-EU relations thus become the cornerstone to not only theorise but also test sovereignty and deconstruct the two ontological and epistemological sides of the same coin, or the modern hypocrisy of sovereignty. This deconstruction constitutes the very problématique of any attempt to understand whether and how a state can be sovereign and solve the problem as to how to neutralise the différance and identify the difference between credible and incredible claims of sovereignty. This problématique connects the theory and practice of sovereignty innovatively, providing positivist evidence on the arguable credibility of the Swiss claim of sovereignty and confirming the presence of a theological dimension within politics.

This dissertation explores sovereignty and statehood in the Transnistrian Moldovan Republic (PMR), a de facto state located in eastern Moldova. Unrecognized for more than two decades, this project explores how non-recognition modifies our understanding of sovereignty. An ethnographic investigation of sovereignty and statehood in an unrecognized polity, this dissertation takes sovereignty and its performances as its central theme not by interrogating axiologically whether the PMR fulfills some or all of the criteria of a sovereign state, whether or not sovereignty is a relevant concept for political authority in the 21st century, or whether the PMR has a right to exist under international law. The context of non-recognition that gives rise to these performances of sovereignty constitutes this dissertation's central operating principle. The domains in which these performances occur become zones for contending with questions about the role of the state and the fate of a people unmoored from the utopian project that provided a sense of belonging and provided for them materially. The sovereign performances provided a means for public and private negotiations of these and other fundamental questions. This study is intended as a contribution to the growing literature on post-socialist sovereignty and political economy, as well as new developments in the social sciences and the humanities that look to the role of images and perceptions in political practice.

This book asks whether sovereignty can guarantee international equality by exploring the discourses of sovereignty and their reliance on the notions of civilisation and savagery in two historical colonial encounters: the French explorations of Canada in the 16th century and the domestic troubles linked to the Wars of Religion. Presenting the concept of ‘civilised sovereignty’, Mathieu reveals the interplay between the domestic and external claims to sovereignty, and offers a dynamic analysis of the theory and practice of the concept. Based on extensive archival research, this book provides an in-depth intellectual picture of the theory and practice of sovereignty in early modern France by focusing on the discourses deployed by French political theorists. Mathieu applies performativity in order to denaturalise these discourses of statehood and reveals how the domestic and international constructions of sovereignty feed into one another and equally rely on appeals to civilisation and savagery. Overall, the book questions the ‘myth of sovereignty as equality’ and reflects on the persistence of this association despite the overwhelming empirical evidence that it institutes international hierarchies and inequalities.
