Buku ini menjelaskan bahwa ‘nasionalisme Indonesia’ saat ini sedang dirunding masalah. Globalisasi dituduh sebagai penyebab dari luar karena mengakibatkan liberalisasi dan dominasi pasar bebas. Akan tetapi, tidak kurang pentingnya adalah faktor internal, khususnya desentralisasi/otonomi daerah yang salah sasaran, dan rusaknya tatanan sosial, hukum, dan politik bangsa akibat melemahnya integritas warga negara dan penyelenggara negara. Wujudnya muncul dalam wajah korupsi perilaku kolutif, dan konflik antaretnik yang seringkali pula mengatasnamakan agama. Kondisi ini mengindikasikan Indonesia sebagai negara-bangsa (nation-state) belum sepenuhnya terbangun. Ketahanan budaya Indonesia juga tengah menghadapi tantangan yang berat. Budaya-budaya daerah/lokal yang merupakan kesatuan dalam ikatan budaya nasional kian melemah sehingga dengan mudah diklaim oleh bangsa lain menjadi miliknya sendiri. Ironisnya, keadaan ini berlangsung tanpa pembelaan yang cukup dari negara. Melemahnya daya tahan budaya ditenggarai karena kegagalan kita sebagai bangsa menyikapi globalisasi secara cerdas sehingga mudah menerima dan menerapkan budaya asing yang beberapa aspeknya justru bertentangan dengan budaya bangsa kita sendiri. Nasionalisme yang kian memudar dan ketahanan budaya yang terus melemah berpotensi menggoyahkan bangunan ‘rumah Indonesia’ yang bersifat multietnik dan multikultural. Kontribusi dari buku ini adalah pada upaya mencari solusi dalam menjawab dua problem kontemporer tersebut melalui pendekatan politik, sosiologis, dan budaya.
