Music aesthetics in late eighteenth-century Germany has always been problematic because there was no aesthetic theory to evaluate the enormous amount of high-quality instrumental music produced by composers like Haydn and Mozart. This book derives a practical aesthetic for German instrumental music during the late eighteenth century from a previously neglected source, reviews of printed instrumental works. At a time when the theory of mimesis dominated aesthetic thought, leaving sonatas and symphonies at the very bottom of the aesthetic hierarchy, a group of reviewers were quietly setting about the task of evaluating instrumental music on its own terms. The reviews document an intersection with trends in literature and philosophy, and reveal interest in criteria like genius, the expressive power of music, and the necessity of unity, several decades earlier than has previously been supposed.

Jahrhundert ist geprägt von Umbrüchen: es ist das Jahrhundert der großen politischen Krisen und Revolutionen, die die letzten unbeschwerten Jahre des Absolutismus in Europa einläuten. Es ist ebenso das Jahrhundert, in dem die starre Ständeordnung durchlässig und zunehmend brüchig wurde und so den Übergang zur bürgerlichen Gesellschaft möglich macht. Ebenso wie die letzten Ausläufer des Barock beherbergt das 18. Jahrhundert Schiller und Goethe und mit ihnen die Hochzeit der deutschen Klassik. Und nicht zuletzt bildet es den zeitlichen Rahmen für die Bewegung der Aufklärung, die das 18. Jahrhundert entscheidend bestimmt hat und bis in unsere Gegenwart nachwirkt. Das 18. Jahrhundert kann kaum losgelöst von der Aufklärungsbewegung betrachtet werden: denn auch wenn die Aufklärung beinahe ausschließlich von gebildeten bürgerlichen Eliten getragen wurde, so löste sie doch Wandlungsprozesse aus, die sich auf die ganze Gesellschaft auswirkten. Es ist aber auch das Jahrhundert, in dem sich für unsere heutige Presselandschaft entscheidende Entwicklungen vollzogen haben. Durch den sich beschleunigenden Übergang von der mündlich vermittelten zur schriftlich fixierten und in Form der Medien institutionalisierten Öffentlichkeit wurden die traditionellen Formen der Informationsvermittlung nicht völlig abgelöst, aber doch zunehmend in den Hintergrund gedrängt.
