This is a print on demand book and is therefore non- returnable. In times when men's hearts are failing them for fear, in a period when many voices are clamoring for a hearing, the esteemed G. C. Berkouwer aptly commences his penetrating study by drawing attention to the timeliness and relevance of the doctrine of perseverance. He writes, "There is something very strange about this doctrine, something which confronts us with the problem of permanence in a unique way, because we are so conscious of our own changeableness. Our lives are subject to numberless variations and fluctuations. In the doctrine of the perseverance of the saints do we not have merely a projection of human desires, a hope which flies in the face of life's realities? Does it not grasp after something that is denied us as changeable men?" Facing this paradoxical nature of his subject, Berkouwer shows that the perseverance of the saints is unbreakably connected with the assurance of faith and warns us against speaking of constancy without standing in faith. To separate the doctrine of perseverance from its living and existential relationship to the gospel, to Word and sacrament, to promise and demand, petrifies it into a mere play of concepts drained of all life. The thoroughness with which Berkouwer treats the history of the discussions affecting this important subject (from the days of Tertullian and Augustine, through the Reformers, Ritschl, and Schleiermacher, down to Edmund Schlink and Karl Barth) gives this book a special value to all students of theology.

Must Faith Endure For Salvation To Be Sure written by Thomas L. Stegall and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-10-03 with Religion categories.

Christians who follow the Bible readily acknowledge that faith in Jesus Christ is necessary for eternal salvation. But if faith is necessary to be saved in the first place, then what happens when a person stops believing? What if a person's faith falters, fails, or is unfruitful? Will that person be lost? Must Faith Endure for Salvation to Be Sure? answers these questions in detail by examining the key biblical passages on perseverance in faith and the believer's preservation in Christ. This book shows from Scripture that all who have placed their faith in Jesus Christ alone, rather than their own good works, will be kept safe and eternally secure by God's grace and power. Rather than the traditional Reformed doctrine of the perseverance of the saints, the Bible teaches that a person's eternal salvation rests solely upon the perseverance of the Savior in keeping His own secure. While perseverance is necessary for the believer's ongoing fellowship with the Lord and spiritual fruitfulness in service to Him, it is not a requirement to possess eternal life. Believers in Christ can be personally assured that they will never perish forever because their salvation rests solely upon the faithfulness and finished work of the Savior on their behalf.

Faith Obedience And Perseverance written by Don Garlington and has been published by Wipf and Stock Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-06-01 with Religion categories.

Intended as sequel to the author's early study 'The Obedience of Faith': A Pauline Phrase in Historical Context, this book explores the interlocking themes of faith, obedience, and perseverance in the letter to the Romans. Don Garlington argues that Paul's phrase the obedience of faith is designed to say two things at the same time, that is, an obedience which consists in faith and which is the outgrowth of faith's commitment to Jesus Christ. The obedience of faith thus articulates both the inception of Christian existence and its continuation in the perseverance of the believer. The author reflects on Romans 2:22's allegation of disobedience (sacrilege) on the part of Israel. Since Paul's conception of (faith's) obedience stands in stark relief to the (unbelieving) disobedience of his Jewish contemporaries, it is only against the backdrop of his indictment of Israel that aspects of his teaching emerge with tolerable clarity. Garlington also examines Romans 2:13: only the doers of the law will be justified in eschatological judgment. Thus, there is in Paul's theology the idea of a future justification of the people of God, which forms an analogue to their present justification. And it is none other than the obedience of faith which provides the link between the two moments of justification. Romans 5 is focused on its portrayal of Christ as the obedient last Adam, who ensures the obedience of faith of his people. An exegesis of Romans 7:14-25 approaches the obedience of faith from the angle of the Christian's experience of the onslaught of the powers of this present evil age. The ideals of the age to come, as set out before, are seen to be tempered by the realism of this period of overlapping aeons. Finally the author reflects on the theological and practical significance of the exegetical materials, including a discussion of justification and sanctification in Christian thought.

A deep study on the doctrine of eternal security Does one moment of faith secure a person's eternal destiny with God--even if that person later stops following and trusting in Jesus? Or does a person have to keep on trusting and following Jesus to remain in a saving relationship with God? Now expanded with new chapters and research, this landmark book continues to offer one of the most penetrating studies on the controversial doctrine of eternal security, perseverance, and apostasy in the New Testament. Calling into question the popular "once saved, always saved" belief, internationally respected pastor and scholar Dr. Robert Shank reveals that the question we should be asking is not, "Is the believer secure?" but rather, "What does it mean to be a believer?" Straightforward, thorough, and grounded in biblical understanding, this book warns Christians about dangers that could potentially lead a believer to become an unbeliever (falling away from faith) and share in the unbeliever's eternal condemnation.

When trials and pain come, they often take many things with them. What is one to do when afflicted with such tragedies? For William D. Brannen, the answer was faith. In this reflection of a life which knows suffering and weakness, William D. Brannen pierces with insight and honesty, as he tells of the afflictions of his youth, and the faith that was required to get through them. Brannen invites the reader to walk with him through his life, through all of the joy and despair, through the moments of doubt and moments of great faithfulness (and to show that the two might not be as distinct as one may think). In his story, Brannen seeks to put on full display the works of God in his life, to tell of the miracles that God has worked in him, and the perseverance of his faith.

This is a very controversial subject which disturbs many people. οIf you do get disturbed it will be because of the emotion usually surrounding the subject of "eternal security." οIf you get upset it will NOT be caused by the manner in which Dr. Marshall has presented the subject. It is the contention of the author that there is biblical truth in both the Calvinistic and the Arminian position concerning this volatile subject, and that each camp should candidly recognize the value of the other's positions. John Wesley once wrote, "The truth of the Gospel is within a hairsbreadth of Calvinism." Quite a concession for the chief spokesman of Arminianism! Dr. I. Howard Marshall echoes the contention of Wesley, and then goes even beyond it. "The full Arminian position is as much open to error as is extreme Calvinism. My aim is to reach beyond the Calvinist-Arminian controversy to a position which is biblical."

Jesus said in John 16:33, "I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world" (ESV). We may think when we are suffering that God has abandoned us or is trying to "punish" us. But nothing could be further from the truth! God wants to develop important character traits in us, one of them being the beautiful gift of perseverance. If we're willing to open our hearts to what He has to teach us in our trials, we can better understand their value, experience peace in the midst of them, and yes, come to believe that each one is worth every second.
