Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products Waste Management and Treatment Technology: Emerging Contaminants and Micro Pollutants provides the tools and techniques for identifying these contaminates and applying the most effective technology for their remediation, recovery and treatment. The consumption of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) has grown significantly over the last 35 years, thus increasing their potential risk to the environment. As PPCPs are very difficult to detect and remove using conventional wastewater treatment methods, this book provides solutions to a growing problem. Includes sampling, analytical and characterization methods and technology for detecting PPCPs in the environment Provides advanced treatment and disposal technologies for the removal of PPCPs from wastewater, surface water, landfills and septic systems Examines the pathways of PPCPs into the environment

There is need in environmental research for a book on fresh waters including rivers and lakes. Compared with other books on the topic, this book has a unique outline in that it follows pollution from sources to impact. Included in the text is the treatment of various tracers, ranging from pathogens to stable isotopes of elements and providing a comprehensive discussion which is lacking in many other books on pollution control of natural waters. Geophysical processes are discussed emphasizing mixing of water, interaction between water and the atmosphere, and sedimentation processes. Important geochemistry processes occurring in natural waters are described as are the processes specific to nutrients, organic pollutants, metals, and pathogens in subsequent chapters. Each of these chapters includes an introduction on the selected groups, followed by the physicochemical properties which are the most relevant to their behavior in natural waters, and the theories and models to describe their speciation, transport and transformation. The book also includes the most up to date information including a discussion on emerging pollutants such as brominated and phosphate flame retardants, perflurochemicals, and pharmaceutical and personal care products. Due to its importance an ecotoxicology chapter has been included featuring molecular biological methods, nanoparticles, and comparison of the basis of biotic ligand model with the Weibull dose-response model. Finally, the last chapter briefly summarizes the regulations on ambient water quality.

Explains key chemicals from drugs and cosmetics in water and clarifies their risks Covers endocrine disruptors and other biologically active compounds Reviews EPA testing protocols for steroids and hormones This book surveys current knowledge regarding endocrine disruptors and other hormone-mimicking compounds in the environment as a result of the disposal of cosmetics, drugs, and cleaning agents. The book investigates dozens of biologically active pollutants, describes their physiological effects, and assesses the evidence of their impact on humans and wildlife. Substances treated include phthalates, bisphenol-A, hormones and an array of steroids. Techniques being investigated by the EPA for the detection and analysis of steroids and hormones in water samples are presented. This is a key reference volume for environmental health, risk assessment and water/wastewater technology.

Presence And Environmental Impact Of Personal Care Products Uv Filters In Urban Aquatic Ecosystems written by João Martins Ferreira Miranda de Távora and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014 with categories.

The increased use of cosmetic products, in particular UV filter compounds, results with their introduction in significant amounts in to aquatic ecosystems. Thus, the study and understanding of these substances in the environment is of major importance because of their potential to bioaccumulate and consequent toxicity, which may have a negative impact on the receiving environment, especially for biota, or even humans. Moreover, the contamination of these compounds is further aggravated in urban ecosystems, as fallout of population pressure and human activities. This master project seeks to analyze the impact of these substances in urban environments by having the city of Barcelona and its surroundings as a case study. To accomplish this, first an extensive literature review on characteristics, environmental and toxicity levels of UV filter compounds was performed. Secondly, water samples from rivers and WWTPs from the urban surroundings of Barcelona were analyzed so as to check the levels of mentioned substances, as well as to calculate the removal efficiency of the treatment stations and the potential risk posed by levels audited.

"This paper focuses on the emerging issue of plastic particles in personal care and cosmetic product (PCCP) formulations as a possible source of micro-sized plastic litter. Known as ‘microbeads’, when used in PCCPs, these microplastic ingredients are solid materials that fall under the definition of marine litter when emitted to the marine environment. The concern is that plastic ingredients in products that are being used by consumers in households worldwide are contributing to the total abundance of plastic particles smaller than 5 mm in the ocean today."--Publisher's description.
