This book deals with risk capital provided for established firms outside the stock market, private equity, which has grown rapidly over the last three decades, yet is largely poorly understood. Although it has often been criticized in the public mind as being short termist and having adverse consequences for employment, in reality this is far from the case. Here, John Gilligan and Mike Wright dispel some of the biggest myths and misconceptions about private equity. The book provides a unique and authoritative source from a leading practitioner and academic for practitioners, policymakers, and researchers that explains in detail what private equity involves and reviews systematic evidence of what the impact of private equity has been. Written in a highly accessible style, the book takes the reader through what private equity means, the different actors involved, and issues concerning sourcing, checking out, valuing, and structuring deals. The various themes from the systematic academic evidence are highlighted in numerous summary vignettes placed alongside the text that discuss the practical aspects. The main part of the work concludes with an up-to-date discussion by the authors, informed commentators on the key issues in the lively debate about private equity. The book further contains summary tables of the academic research carried out over the past three decades across the private equity landscape including: the returns to investors, economic performance, impact on R&D and employees, and the longevity and life-cycle of private equity backed deals.

Excerpt from The Meaning of Personal Life This book is the result of studies of the meanings of nature and life, which the author has pursued since the publication in 1902 of his Lowell Lectures, Through Science to Faith. Since then the author has from time to time taken up anew the conclusions to which he had been led in that volume, and it has been his aim to review the reasonings of that earlier book as though it were the work of another. From more recent scientific researches and working-theories he has sought to know better what is the real meaning of the final and supreme fact in nature of the personal life. This is no easy task; for all ways of investigation lead up toward this ultimate problem, yet no science by itself alone can tell the answer to the old question, What is your life? The reasonable answer, which religious faith seeks, is ultimately to be found at the point where all the ways of knowledge meet. Though such inquiries must traverse many fields of the specialists and among confusing side-paths, nevertheless, the method of such pursuit of truth may be simple and straightforward. Many summer wanderings through the solitudes of the woods of northern Maine may have unconsciously taught me the method which I have pursued through the following pages. As described more fully in the opening chapter, it is to look at first all around for any slightest indications of direction; and then, keeping preconceived ideas out of mind, to follow the trail from sign to sign. Biographical books, or bios, are detailed descriptions of a person's life. A biography is more than simply the basic facts, like education, work, relationships, and death. It portrays a person's experience of major life events. A biography presents a subject's life story, emphasizing certain aspects of his or her life, and including intimate details of their experiences, which may include an analysis of their personality. Biographical works are generally non-fiction, but fictional works can also be used to portray a person's life. An in-depth form of biographical coverage is referred to as legacy writing. An authorized biography refers to a book written with the permission, cooperation, and at times, participation of the subject or the subject's heirs. An autobiography, on the other hand, is written by the person themselves, sometimes with the assistance of a collaborator or "ghostwriter".
