The United States gained control of the Philippines by defeating the Spanish in Cuba and in the Philippines in 1898, but the Filipinos, after being embroiled in a revolt against the Spanish, had no intention of becoming a colony of another imperialist power and resisted the United States. The official date of the end of the war between the United States and the Philippines is 1902, yet fighting continued in the islands for several years. This book is an annotated bibliography of newspaper articles, books, and other resources pertaining to the United States military forces in the Philippines, including accounts by prisoners of war, pieces written by and about military personnel such as Ferdinand Marcos, information on Philippine military organizations, and coverage of the 1941-1942 Philippine campaign of World War II. An introduction examines the history of the American military presence in the Philippines from the Philippine-American war (1898-1902) to the defeat of Philippine forces by the Japanese in 1941-1942. The almost 700 entries in this bibliography reflect the wealth of information published on the American military presence in the Philippines, information spread throughout a large number of libraries and archives in the United States and the Philippines; this bibliography draws it all together.

A Soldier in the Philippines by Needom N. Freeman The Battle of Bayan and Other Battles by James Edgar Allen & John J. Reidy Two accounts within one special edition As the 19th Century drew to a close and the United States had consolidated its dominance of North America, the new nation looked outwards into a world of imperial powers who vied with each other to dominate the globe in influence and trade. Those Americans who believed that a great nation should not be absent from great politics ensured that the United States would soon be flexing its own muscles on the international stage. War in Cuba-the Spanish American War-followed, together with the annexation of the Philippine Islands. There the American forces had to deal with Spanish forces, those Philippinos who had their own ideas on independence and with the Moros, a fierce Muslim tribal minority ready to take on all comers. This book is not a campaign history. It deals with the day to day experiences on campaign-and on the firing line-of ordinary American soldiers fighting on strange and foreign shores. These recollections make fascinating reading for those interested in the early period of the American Army at war beyond its own frontiers.

Military obligations rested lightly upon the Filipino people for much of the period that America occupied the Philippines, but Filipinos could enlist in the United States Army and Navy, attend the service academies at West Point and Annapolis, or join military organizations restricted to duty in the islands such as the Philippine Scouts, Philippine Constabulary, Philippine National Guard, and the navy's insular force. In the 1930s, the Philippine government established its own armed forces. Throughout much of this time, the U.S. army also kept a substantial portion of its troop strength in the Philippines. This annotated bibliography of nearly 700 titles highlights the extent and variety of the Philippine-American military experience from the conquest of the islands by the United States in 1902 to the defeat of Philippine and American forces by the Japanese in 1942. The bibliography includes memoirs and biographies of Filipino and American officers and enlisted men (from MacArthur to Ferdinand Marcos), unit histories, army post and navy base histories, medals and insignia books, and the most extensive list of prisoner-of-war memoirs yet published. Annotations address controversies such as the widely disparate estimates of American deaths on the Bataan Death March and include previously unpublished information, such as casualty figures for American and Philippine forces in 1941-1942.

In 1899 the United States, having announced its arrival as a world power during the Spanish-Cuban-American War, inaugurated a brutal war of imperial conquest against the Philippine Republic. Over the next five decades, U.S. imperialists justified their colonial empire by crafting novel racial ideologies adapted to new realities of collaboration and anticolonial resistance. In this path breaking, transnational study, Paul A. Kramer reveals how racial politics served U.S. empire, and how empire-building in turn transformed ideas of race and nation in both the United States and the Philippines. Kramer argues that Philippine-American colonial history was characterized by struggles over sovereignty and recognition. In the wake of a racial-exterminist war, U.S. colonialists, in dialogue with Filipino elites, divided the Philippine population into ''civilized'' Christians and ''savage'' animists and Muslims. The former were subjected to a calibrated colonialism that gradually extended them self-government as they demonstrated their ''capacities.'' The latter were governed first by Americans, then by Christian Filipinos who had proven themselves worthy of shouldering the ''white man's burden.'' Ultimately, however, this racial vision of imperial nation-building collided with U.S. nativist efforts to insulate the United States from its colonies, even at the cost of Philippine independence. Kramer provides an innovative account of the global transformations of race and the centrality of empire to twentieth-century U.S. and Philippine histories.
