National Health Education Standards, Third Edition, empowers preK-12 health educators to develop high-quality health education programs that improve outcomes for students, providing them with skills for lifelong health and well-being. Created by SHAPE America–Society of Health and Physical Educators, the leading advocate for health and physical education, this text unveils the revised standards and performance indicators, offers guidelines for implementation and assessment, and advances the idea that health education means equity, access, and inclusion for all. Going beyond the standards and performance indicators themselves, National Health Education Standards, Third Edition, offers detailed guidance on how to effectively implement them. It leads preservice teachers and current practitioners in planning curricula, building lesson plans around the standards, and creating meaningful assessments. This latest edition features the revised standards, which reflect the following key shifts: Incorporating developmentally appropriate progressions of performance indicators for each standard across the grade spans Incorporating asset-based language (i.e., words, phrases, and concepts that focus on the strengths and potential of students) Emphasizing not only individual behavior change but also broader structures, including families, communities, and laws and policies that affect health and well-being Incorporating themes related to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion The book begins by examining the guiding principles for the National Health Education Standards and the goals of health education. It devotes a full chapter to equity, access, and inclusion for all, including the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child model. It then provides advice on the implementation of curriculum design and instruction plans and types of assessments within health education. The book concludes with a closer look at the standards and provides additional details on the revision process and the need for updated standards to keep pace with an evolving world. Administrators and teachers can confidently use National Health Education Standards, Third Edition, to create high-quality health education programs that prepare students to be healthy and well throughout their lives.

Balancing Acts In Personal Social And Health Education written by Judith Ryder and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-03-06 with Education categories.

This book, originally published in 1988, is designed for two types of reader: teachers trying out active learning methods and those with responsibilities for curriculum coordination and staff development. Its view of PSHE, and of the balance between personal and social values, is argued in relation to theoretical and practical questions which teachers can explore through a variety of exercises as they read. The authors offer four models of PSHE and a technique to help teachers identify these different approaches in practice. A framework is suggested for distinguishing PSHE form other areas, including the Pastoral Curriculum, Health Education, Moral Education and Careers Education, and a procedure, using grids, is described to help identify which elements of PSHE are being taught and by whom. Given their commitment to a holistic view of health, in which both individuality and collaboration have a place, the authors argue for active teaching methods and include examples of a wide range of PSHE exercises and evaluation techniques for use in schools. The book also discusses the importance of ‘healthy’ whole school organisation and suggests strategies for staff development.

Personal, social, health and economic education (PSHE) and relationships, (sex) and health education (R(S)HE) are often undervalued in school and are frequently seen as an add-ons. But when taught well, PSHE and R(S)HE can enhance not only other subjects but strengthen school safeguarding, develop pupil well-being and improve pupils' progress and resilience in learning. Underpinned by a range of contemporary research and illustrated through examples of classroom practice, the expert team of teacher educators look at a range of curriculum areas and contemporary issues to explore how PSHE and R(S)HE education can enhance other curriculum areas. As well as showing how pupils' life skills can be developed, they also explore how teachers' understanding of how PSHE and R(S)HE can be implemented without additional planning or expensive resources. The book takes an inclusive understanding of both diverse families and relationships throughout. Topics covered include: -social media, online presence and critical literacy skills -mental health coping strategies -plastic reducing -topical, sensitive, controversial issues (TSCIs) Covering the whole primary spectrum from Early Years to Key Stage 2, case studies from each phase are included within each chapter to help practitioners to relate the material to their own classroom. Points to consider for your setting are included and guidance on further reading provides reliable direction for additional information.

The World Health Organization defines the social determinants of health as "the conditions in which people are born, grow, work, live, and age, and the wider set of forces and systems shaping the conditions of daily life." These forces and systems include economic policies, development agendas, cultural and social norms, social policies, and political systems. In an era of pronounced human migration, changing demographics, and growing financial gaps between rich and poor, a fundamental understanding of how the conditions and circumstances in which individuals and populations exist affect mental and physical health is imperative. Educating health professionals about the social determinants of health generates awareness among those professionals about the potential root causes of ill health and the importance of addressing them in and with communities, contributing to more effective strategies for improving health and health care for underserved individuals, communities, and populations. Recently, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened a workshop to develop a high-level framework for such health professional education. A Framework for Educating Health Professionals to Address the Social Determinants of Health also puts forth a conceptual model for the framework's use with the goal of helping stakeholder groups envision ways in which organizations, education, and communities can come together to address health inequalities.
