This new and timely book deals with the magnitude and the intensity of the poverty in Latin America, Mexico and the state of Nuevo Leon. The enormous and chronic social problems of poverty in 1970 struck approximately 40 per cent of the families of Latin America or 119 million people. In 1990, of 423,913,043 habitants of Latin America, 46 per cent were living in poverty, that is to say, 195 million people were suffering this calamity (CEPAL). According to the same CEPAL, in 2002 44 per cent of the population of Latin America was poor, whereas 19.40 per cent were living in extreme poverty, indigence or misery. Seen in another way, the poverty in Latin America increased in that period of 20 years, from 1970 to 1990, 38.97 per cent. At the moment, in Latin America there are 225 million poor people. This book is an essential reference to a problem which the world must, if for no other reason than necessity, deal with in a vigorous and just manner.

Este libro conjunta diversos estudios que dirigen la reflexión al entrecruce de la desigualdad de género con otras desigualdades sociales, en el contexto de la crisis económica actual y sus efectos en las transformaciones en los diferentes ámbitos de la vida de las mujeres y hombres en el norte de México. Los trabajos que se incluyen abordan temas tradicionales en los estudios de género como el trabajo, la familia y la participación política, de la misma manera que temas consolidados como la salud reproductiva, la identidad y la historia, así como el desarrollo rural. Desde distintas teorías y metodologías, se analiza evidencias empíricas en la búsqueda de elementos explicativos que contribuyan a la mayor comprensión de las desigualdades entre los géneros en una zona con un alto grado de avance económico y social. Los textos coinciden en una apreciación central: A pesar de los avances en la equidad entre mujeres y hombres en esta región, en los albores del siglo XXI todavía persisten desigualdades y hasta retrocesos en esta materia, Factores como la crisis económica, que ha concluido a una incertidumbre laboral y social, el conservadurismo de algunos grupos sociales en las entidades norteñas, en cuanto a la participación de mujeres en la toma de decisiones- sobre su propio cuerpo inclusive- y la persistencia histórica de la violencia, son elementos fundamentales para entender las inequidades entre hombres y mujeres en la región. Sin embargo, las desigualdades de género no son exclusivas del norte de México, por lo que también se incluye un par de capítulos sobre otras regiones del país. En Los estudios de género en el norte de México a umbrales del siglo XXI se recupera no sólo la descripción y análisis de las desigualdades y vulnerabilidades de las mujeres norteñas, también se rescata la agencia femenina, misma que se hace presente con el propósito de lograr mejores condiciones de equidad de género y justicia en distintos ámbitos de la vida social.
