The National Commission for the Culture and the Arts (NCAA) advocates the promotions of Sagisag Kultura ng Filipinas (lossely translated as Philippine Cultural Icons) as an initiative to heighten awareness and deepen understsanding of Filipino roots and culture. The thesis examines how tourism and cultural experts perceive selected tourism destinations as cultural icons. This study espuses the tenets of social judgement theory first introduced by Sherif and Hovland in 1961. The range of judgemental latitudes, namely acceptance, rejection, and noncommitment, is determined in a-depth interview. Content analysis is used as data analysis technique that underpins the collection of the expets' perception on the enlistment of 30 tourism destinations as cultural icons. The findings and analysis revealed five themes to descibe the range of acceptance: high historical value, broad acceptance among tourists, outstanding aesthetic appeal, toursim that reflects Filipino identity, and provides complete tourim experience. Then, three themes emerged within the latitude of rejections: caters to a few, lost its natural beauty, and undermines Filipino culture. Finallly, two themes recurred in the latitude of noncommitment: unfamiliarity with the tourism destination and tourism destination fall short compared to other icons. The current findings provide new understanding of Philippine cultural icons, specifically on the intrinsic values of each selected tourism destination. The study contributes to existing knowledge by utilizing the social judgement theory in the field of tourism and the context of Philippine culture. Taken together, this research will serve as reference for future studies on icons, cultural iconsm and cultural tourism icons.

The Chinese Heart In A Cognitive Perspective written by Ning Yu and has been published by De Gruyter Mouton this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with Foreign Language Study categories.

This book is a cognitive semantic study of the Chinese conceptualization of the heart, traditionally seen as the central faculty of cognition. The Chinese word xin, which primarily denotes the heart organ, covers the meanings of both "heart" and "mind" as understood in English, which upholds a heart-head dichotomy. In contrast to the Western dualist view, Chinese takes on a more holistic view that sees the heart as the center of both emotions and thought. The contrast characterizes two cultural traditions that have developed different conceptualizations of person, self, and agent of cognition. The concept of "heart" lies at the core of Chinese thought and medicine, and its importance to Chinese culture is extensively manifested in the Chinese language. Diachronically, this book traces the roots of its conception in ancient Chinese philosophy and traditional Chinese medicine. Along the synchronic dimension, it not only makes a systematic analysis of conventionalized expressions that reflect the underlying cultural models and conceptualizations, as well as underlying conceptual metaphors and metonymies, but also attempts a textual analysis of an essay and a number of poems for their metaphoric and metonymic images and imports contributing to the cultural models and conceptualizations. It also takes up a comparative perspective that sheds light on similarities and differences between Western and Chinese cultures in the understanding of the heart, brain, body, mind, self, and person. The book contributes to the understanding of the embodied nature of human cognition situated in its cultural context, and the relationship between language, culture, and cognition.

Languages are constantly changing, sometimes into entirely new varieties of speech, leading to subtle differences in how we present ourselves to others. This revealing account brings together eleven leading specialists from the fields of linguistics, anthropology, philosophy and psychology, to explore the fascinating relationship between language, culture, and social interaction. A range of major questions are discussed: How does language influence our perception of the world? How do new languages emerge? How do children learn to use language appropriately? What factors determine language choice in bi- and multilingual communities? How far does language contribute to the formation of our personalities? And finally, in what ways does language make us human? Language, Culture and Society will be essential reading for all those interested in language and its crucial role in our social lives.

Cultural Democracy written by James Bau Graves and has been published by University of Illinois Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-10-01 with Art categories.

Cultural Democracy explores the crisis of our national cultural vitality, as access to the arts becomes increasingly mediated by a handful of corporations and the narrow tastes of wealthy elites. Graves offers the concept of cultural democracy as corrective--an idea with important historic and contemporary validation, and an alternative pathway toward ethical cultural development that is part of a global shift in values. Drawing upon a range of scholarship and illustrative anecdotes from his own experiences with cultural programs in ethnically diverse communities, Graves explains in convincing detail the dynamics of how traditional and grassroots cultures may survive and thrive--or not--and what we can do to provide them opportunities equal to those of mainstream, Eurocentric culture.

Gongs Bamboo written by José Maceda and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998 with Music categories.

This panorama is a pictorial view of music instruments starting with older bamboo and other instruments of undetermined age, going on two types of gongs-flat in Northern Luzon and bossed in the South. These two areas may be viewed as pocket cultures comparable to other pocket cultures in Borneo, Sumatra, other islands in Southeast Asia and the mountain regions south of and including Yunnan province of China, thus placing the music of Luzon and Mindanao in a larger geographical context. For example, mouth organs in Borneo and continental Southeast Asia are absent in the Philippines, where, however, separate pipes of panpipes are on occasion still being played by groups of boys among the Kalingga of Luzon. The musical elements of drone and melody identified in two lutes in Borneo or ensembles in Yunnan find examples in two players of the same tube zither in Mindanao and flat gongs in Luzon. The nearly 500 photographs in the book are almost all taken in the field, showing details of making and playing bamboo buzzers, jaw harps, zithers, percussion tubes, flutes and other instruments. Manners of tapping and sliding with the hands on flat gongs differ from beating them with sticks. Examples of big bossed gongs with wide rims (agung) struck with a mallet on the boss and a stick on the rim show affinities with a manner of playing bronze drums in Yunnan. In North Luzon, men and women dancing in circles with outstretched hands distinguish them from solo dancers with minimum body movements in the South.

Engaging and sophisticated, Teaching About Culture, Ethnicity & Diversity is a book of easy-to-use classroom and training exercises that are intended for use in teaching about culture, ethnicity, and diversity. Editor Theodore M. Singelis offers tools for teachers and trainers who strive to increase understanding of and communication between ethnic and racial groups. This pragmatic volume is arranged so that users may easily draw on activities to involve students and bring abstract concepts into the realm of the students′ own experiences. Although there are common themes that run through the book, each exercise is presented as a self-contained unit with clear instructions, handouts, discussion suggestions, and a concise explanation of the research-based concept that is illuminated by the activity. The first section contains exercises that vary in focus and includes topics such as ethnography, time, and disability. The second section focuses on culture and behavior, while the third centers on identity, stereotypes, and personal perception. Finally, the book concludes with exercises that highlight the cultural construction of reality. A practical tool for both teachers and trainers, Teaching About Culture, Ethnicity, and Diversity will be invaluable in the fields of clinical/counseling psychology, social psychology, cross-cultural psychology, business, management, communication, ethnic studies, and cultural studies.
