This is a revisionist study of the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century rural origins of modern Egypt, dealing with the first phase of the rise of the modern state and the country's incorporation into the world economy. Professor Cuno uses previously underexploited sources - court records, fatwas, and land-tax registers - to shed new light on changes in the system of peasant land tenure, urban-rural commerce, the rural social structure, and the interplay of formal law with peasant customs and attitudes. The author challenges traditional interpretations of Egypt's past which draw too sharp a distinction between the 'Ottoman' and 'modern' periods, a distinction closely related to the notion that contact with Europe brought on the 'awakening' of the modern nation. Cuno offers a new perspective on changes introduced in the agrarian regime by Muhammad Ali Pasha (1805-48) by comparing them with the policies of earlier rulers. He also refutes the view that cash-crop agriculture, the commoditization of land, and a stratified rural society were nineteenth-century developments, showing instead that they were centuries-old features of the Egyptian countryside. The Pasha's peasants will be of interest not only to students of Egyptian and Middle East history but also to those with a general interest in issues of law and society, peasants, and the making of the modern non-Western world.

Abstract: The FR played an important role in the Egyptian rural life. It shaped the relation between the farmers and the state. It mainly helped the state to impose tax, collect it and make use of it. The social and anthropological changes the FR caused helped in the formation of modern Egypt. However the FR penalties were characterised with severity, as the punishment was not compatible with the offence being committed. This cruelness made the Egyptian peasant tries to escape the land and always have a hostile relation with the system. The thesis is to examine the various FR articles, its different parts and implications. It would be crucial to show that the penalties were not sharia based although the legislator tried to indicate otherwise. The cases examined showed that the penalties were mainly to cater for the state’s benefit rather than the farmers’ one. However, the legislative Egyptian body worked to make the FR as a method of standardization.

The history of capitalism in Egypt has long been synonymous with cotton cultivation and dependent development. From this perspective, the British occupation of 1882 merely sealed the country's fate as a vast plantation for European textile mills. All but obscured in such accounts, however, is Egypt's emergence as a colonial laboratory for financial investment and experimentation. Egypt's Occupation tells for the first time the story of that financial expansion and the devastating crises that followed. Aaron Jakes offers a sweeping reinterpretation of both the historical geography of capitalism in Egypt and the role of political-economic thought in the struggles that raged over the occupation. He traces the complex ramifications and the contested legacy of colonial economism, the animating theory of British imperial rule that held Egyptians to be capable of only a recognition of their own bare economic interests. Even as British officials claimed that "economic development" and the multiplication of new financial institutions would be crucial to the political legitimacy of the occupation, Egypt's early nationalists elaborated their own critical accounts of boom and bust. The Power of Representation traces the emergence of modern Egyptian national identity from the mid-1870s through the 1910s. During this period, a new class of Egyptian urban intellectuals—teachers, lawyers, engineers, clerks, accountants, and journalists—came into prominence. Adapting modern ideas of individual moral autonomy and universal citizenship, this group reconfigured religiously informed notions of the self and created a national sense of "Egyptian-ness" drawn from ideas about Egypt's large peasant population. The book breaks new ground by calling into question the notion, common in historiography of the modern Middle East and the Muslim world in general, that in the nineteenth century "secular" aptitudes and areas of competency were somehow separate from "religious" ones. Instead, by tying the burgeoning Islamic modernist movement to the process of identity formation and its attendant political questions Michael Gasper shows how religion became integral to modern Egyptian political, social, and cultural life.
