Spätestens seit dem Erscheinen von Dietrich Busses und Wolfgang Teuberts Aufsatz „Ist Diskurs ein sprachwissenschaftliches Objekt?“ (1994) hat die Linguistische Diskursanalyse (manchmal mit dem Zusatz versehen „nach Foucault“) ein vielfältiges Echo in und außerhalb der Sprachwissenschaft gefunden. Insbesondere Sozialwissenschaftler sind mit dieser Forschungsrichtung in einen interdisziplinären Dialog eingetreten, der in den verschiedensten Foren und Forschungsverbünden bis heute anhält. Der Sonderforschungsbereich 333 der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München wurde 1984/85 von Wissenschaftlern und Wissenschaftlerinnen des soziologischen Instituts und des Geschwister-Scholl-Instituts für politische Wissenschaften der Universität München, des Instituts für Soziologie und Gesellschaftspolitik der Hochschule der Bundeswehr, des deutschen Jugendinstituts und des Instituts für sozialwissenschaftliche Forschung (ISF) in den Absicht gegründet, „neue Entwicklungen von Arbeit im Spannungsfeld von institutionell-organisatorischen Strukturen und individuellen Lebenszusammenhängen" zu untersuchen. In diesem Band sind alle Teilprojekte, die Teil dieser stabilen Struktur waren, also mindestens in der zweiten und dritten Finanzierungsperiode – in der Zeit von 1989 bis 1995 – zum Sonderforschungsbereich 333 gehörten, mit einem Beitrag (in Einzelfällen auch mit zwei Beiträgen) vertreten.
