Wie lernen Menschen religiöse oder religionsanaloge Sinnhorizonte und symbolische Praktiken kennen? Wie eignen sie sich diese an? In welchem Kontext und an welchen Lernorten geschieht dies? Diese Fragen bekommen eine besondere Dringlichkeit im Kontext mehrheitlicher Konfessionslosigkeit, in dem die meisten Menschen nicht religiös sozialisiert wurden. Die Forschungsstelle für religiöse Kommunikations- und Lernprozesse an der Theologischen Fakultät der Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg, widmet sich diesen Fragen seit zehn Jahren. Im vorliegenden Band werden die hier entstandenen Studien gebündelt präsentiert und unter dem Leitbegriff der Perspektivverschiebung diskutiert. These questions take on a particular urgency in the context of majority non-denominationalism, where most people have not been socialized religiously. The Research Center for Religious Communication and Learning Processes at the Faculty of Theology of Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, Germany, has devoted itself to these questions for ten years. In the present volume, the studies produced here are presented in a bundled form and discussed under the guiding concept of shifting perspectives. The aim is to give impulses for a contextual and engaged religious education.

This book offers a novel account of grace framed in terms of Bruno Latour’s “principle of irreduction.” It thus models an object-oriented approach to grace, experimentally moving a traditional Christian understanding of grace out of a top-down, theistic ontology and into an agent-based, object-oriented ontology. In the process, it also provides a systematic and original account of Latour’s overall project. The account of grace offered here redistributes the tasks assigned to science and religion. Where now the work of science is to bring into focus objects that are too distant, too resistant, and too transcendent to be visible, the business of religion is to bring into focus objects that are too near, too available, and too immanent to be visible. Where science reveals transcendent objects by correcting for our nearsightedness, religion reveals immanent objects by correcting for our farsightedness. Speculative Grace remaps the meaning of grace and examines the kinds of religious instruments and practices that, as a result, take center stage.

In Racial Melancholia, Racial Dissociation critic David L. Eng and psychotherapist Shinhee Han draw on case histories from the mid-1990s to the present to explore the social and psychic predicaments of Asian American young adults from Generation X to Generation Y. Combining critical race theory with several strands of psychoanalytic thought, they develop the concepts of racial melancholia and racial dissociation to investigate changing processes of loss associated with immigration, displacement, diaspora, and assimilation. These case studies of first- and second-generation Asian Americans deal with a range of difficulties, from depression, suicide, and the politics of coming out to broader issues of the model minority stereotype, transnational adoption, parachute children, colorblind discourses in the United States, and the rise of Asia under globalization. Throughout, Eng and Han link psychoanalysis to larger structural and historical phenomena, illuminating how the study of psychic processes of individuals can inform investigations of race, sexuality, and immigration while creating a more sustained conversation about the social lives of Asian Americans and Asians in the diaspora.
