La historia de España ha sido presentada a menudo en términos de ocaso, frustración y excepcionalidad. Desde fines del siglo XX se impone el paradigma contrario, una óptica comparativa que nos asimila al resto de Europa y trueca la «diferencia» por «normalidad». No obstante persisten, como fantasmas que se resisten a desaparecer, pulsiones negativas que se traducen en crítica despiadada del presente, escasa autoestima y manifiesta desconfianza en nuestro futuro. La realidad española ha sido contemplada sistemáticamente con un cristal oscuro y posiblemente distorsionador, hasta el punto de que los más negros augurios han condicionado nuestro camino. Es el peso del pesimismo en nuestra historia reciente -algo más de un siglo-, un período que empieza con sensación de decadencia insondable, continúa con la estimación de continuos fracasos -los desastres del 98, 1909, 1921-, contempla la vida nacional como esperpento, se sume en el despedazamiento fratricida de la guerra civil, se lame luego las heridas complaciéndose en las nociones de fiasco colectivo y trayectoria errada, y termina poniendo en cuestión hasta los éxitos reconocidos por los demás (el desencanto en el proceso de transición a la democracia). El pesimismo aparece así como una sombra ominosa que marca la reflexión de unas elites y se proyecta sobre el conjunto de la nación.
