Peasant Rebellion in a Slave Society identifies the immediate and remote reasons for the Balaiada revolt in Maranhão, Brazil, analyzing the special characteristics of the region that favored the development of a relatively independent peasantry within and around the cotton, rice, cassava, and cattle estates. The book explores the demography of Maranhão and patterns of land ownership and documents the rapid degradation of the environment by plantation‐based export agriculture. The analysis of various types of coerced and free labor, the oligopolistic structure of the colonial economy, and the key determinants of class and status contextualizes the conflict potential in Maranhão during the first half of the nineteenth century. The “People of Color,” as they called themselves, and enslaved workers from plantations rose against a White and conservative elite, claiming their constitutional rights or their freedom. The central government in Rio de Janeiro had to dispatch considerable amounts of money and troops to defeat the insurrection and subject the province again to imperial rule and enslaved workers and peasants to the plantocracy. This richly illustrated volume will be of interest to students and scholars working on slavery in the Americas and the Atlantic world, as well as Brazilian history.

É com alegria e orgulho que estamos lançando a presente Coletânea, intitulada “História Cultural: reflexões contemporâneas”. Ela é fruto das discussões ocorridas nos eixos temáticos, durante o último evento do GT Nacional de História Cultural. Esse grupo, desde 2001, vem mantido ativo o espaço de debates em torno de temas já consagrados no âmbito da História Cultural, sempre estimulando reflexões acerca de perspectivas teóricas e metodológicas, que dão base para os campos de interlocução do historiador cultural. A nona edição do evento, ocorrida em 2018, se propôs a esquadrinhar, de maneira aprofundada, uma temática de grande interesse para os historiadores, a saber: “Culturas – Artes - Políticas / Utopias e distopias do mundo contemporâneo: 1968 – 50 anos depois”. Esse tema central permitiu muitas possibilidades de trabalho, os quais poderão ser, agora, desfrutados pelos leitores interessados em aprofundar seus conhecimentos. Com efeito, os leitores terão a oportunidade de encontrar uma pequena, porém rica, parcela das discussões e reflexões oriundas do campo da História Cultural, apresentadas por autores de diferentes instituições, os quais, apesar de suas especificidades, possuem como elemento orientador a interdisciplinaridade e o exercício de acuidade teórico-metodológica. Sendo assim, os problemas centrais ofereceram a oportunidade para refletir acerca das diferentes maneiras de produzir conhecimento em História em sua interface com as questões teórico-metodológicos atinentes aos diálogos com as memórias, com as artes e com o pensamento político. Na verdade, nas últimas décadas, os horizontes investigativos e de pesquisa do Historiador Cultural ampliaram-se, sobretudo graças aos estímulos proporcionados por temas e objetos privilegiados pelos historiadores que se voltam para esse campo. Com esta breve apresentação, esperamos que a diversidade e riqueza de análises reunidas nesta coletânea possam encantar e inspirar nossos leitores.
