Banana pseudostem weevil, Odoiporus longicollis (Olivier) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is an important pest of banana (Musa spp.) plants causing heavy yield reductions throughout the world. Farmers mainly depend upon the synthetic insecticides to manage this pest, but it was more expensive and caused many problems to human being and domestic animals and also to our environment. The present investigation was carried out to study the olfactory responses of the pseudostem weevil O. longicollis against the decayed pseudostem and its extract under laboratory conditions. Banana pseudostem were allowed to decay for 1, 3, 5 and 7 days and used for the experiment. Results revealed that both 7 days decayed pseudostem (53.35%) and its extract (75.0%) has more attractant property when compared to other experimental decayed pseudostem and its extracts. The results suggest that decayed pseudostem based attractant can be used as the trapping agent for the management of O. longicollis.

Management of banana stem weevil Odoiporus longicollis (Oliver) were undertaken with integration of farmers knowledge, practices and attitudes to bio-rational and chemical pesticides where regular monitoring were practiced for decision making in weevil management. The use of poor sucker, old age crops, poor crop management practices and heavy use of chemical pesticides were the causal factors for the weevil infestation in banana orchard. The chemical pesticides were significantly different than the botanicals and indigenous materials for the reduction of weevil population. Maximum reduction of population over control was achieved by Annosom and cow urine among bio-rational pesticides, whereas the highest reduction over control was achieved by Aluminium Phosphide. Organic pest management did not cause immediate mortality as compared to inorganic ones, but these have no residual effect, no health hazards and are eco-friendly. Hence, for effective and sustainable management of stem weevil, it should be combined all possible means with utilizing the traditional farmers knowledges are important

Banana one of the most popular consumed fruits in the tropical and sub-tropical region. Most of the edible bananas present now a days are derived solely from Musa accuminata Colla or Musa balbisiana Colla or a hybrid between the two wild diploid species. The main objective of this research work is to provide an overview of various pest and diseases affecting Banana in South India. Diseases and pests of edible banana became problems when certain genotypes were grown as monocultures. Fusarium wilt and Sigatoka leaf spot were also affect the banana production in South-India. Bacterial wilt and Xanthomonas wilt are other bacterial diseases affecting the banana production. Bunchy top and bract mosaic are damaging virus diseases, which have a limited distribution at present. Virus diseases mosaic and streak are less damaging, but more widespread. Pre- and post-harvest diseases of fruit also cause losses. The burrowing nematode is the most important root parasite of banana, and the most damaging banana insect pest is the rhizome-attacking banana weevil. Genetic engineering and other biotechnology-based approaches could produce better diseases tolerant varieties. Chemical control has been employed successfully in the past to counter pests and pathogens, but resistance to fungicides and pesticides is becoming a major issue. Biological control methods are being employed more often in integrated pest management programmes could offer a promising result to address this issue.

The banana weevil is a pest on bananas and plantains throughout the tropics. No published studies exist on the banana weevil in smallholder banana and plantain systems within the Bribri-Cabécar Indigenous Territories in Talamanca, Costa Rica. These include monoculture plantain and organic banana in agroforestry systems. Concerns exist over pesticide use in plantain and conversion of agroforestry systems to monoculture plantain. Alternatives to pesticides in plantain and improved pest management in organic banana to increase profitability of agroforestry systems are needed. Such efforts must be undertaken with an understanding of the socioeconomic and agroecological context of the indigenous territories. We conducted a livelihoods analysis of cacao agroforestry systems comparing cacao to plantain and organic banana. Existing production data was integrated with data from household interviews to identify factors in the decline of cacao agroforestry systems. We also conducted a rapid rural appraisal with plantain and organic banana producers. Semi-structured interviews with 75 farmers examined current pest management practices and perceptions of pest status and biology. In plantain, 63% of farmers used combination nematicide-insecticides for banana weevil control. Most organic banana farmers (61%) did not use banana weevil management practices. We assessed banana weevil damage levels and yield in 21 organic banana agroforestry farms. Yield was correlated with damage in the banana corm cortex, and 94.7% of damage was in the cortex. To determine efficacy of pheromone traps for banana weevil management in smallholder plantain farms, we evaluated weevil damage and yield before and after 58 weeks of trapping. Traps were placed in six farms at recommended rates, and six farms without traps were controls. Weevil damage decreased by 33% in farms with traps, and did not decrease in control farms. There was no reduction in trap catches, indicating that damage reduction can occur without reduction of weevil populations. We evaluated movement patterns of banana weevils in response to host plant volatiles at 1 and 2 m distances in the field. Weevils were tagged, released, and relocated using harmonic radar. Weevils oriented to host plant volatiles at 1 m but not 2 m, and displayed positive orthokinesis at both distances.
