Every third year, the members of the International Association for Neo-Latin Studies (IANLS) assemble for a week-long conference. Peter Schumacher (1635-1699) var blot en vinhandlersøn, da han kom til kongens København og gav sig til at klatre op ad den sociale rangstige. Til tops nåede han, og han blev både rigskansler og greve af Griffenfeld. Men Griffenfeld, der var med til at muliggøre enevældens indførelse, blev selv offer for sit eget projekt. Var det ikke for enevælden, var den ellers så magtfulde greve ikke faldet i unåde hos kongen og sendt i fængsel på Munkholm, fået frataget sin titel og endt sine dage som livstidsfangen Peter Schumacher. Fortællingen om Griffenfeld er ikke blot historien om en usædvanlig skikkelse, der fik enorm indflydelse på danmarkshistorien. Det er også en fortælling om en af de mest spændende perioder i landets historie, nemlig indførelsen af enevælden. Sebastian Olden-Jørgensen (f. 1964) er en dansk forfatter og lektor i historie ved Københavns Universitet. Han forsker hovedsageligt i dansk historie imellem 1500 og 1700 og har udgivet flere bøger om denne periode.
