‘“I haven’t seen an ocean for years, but I know one’s out there,” states Bolina. In fact, it’s here in Bolina’s book, a veritable tidal wave of verse, lines spilling forth propulsively and carrying with them keen observation of the everyday, “the jamboree of a crosswalk”. This Green Rose Prize winner is sophisticated but eminently embraceable, a tip-off of what’s to come.’ The Library Journal ‘As full of candour and ontological inquiry as they are of verve, panache, and wit, the poems in Bolina’s second collection stretch and dilate, in order to, as the author puts it, “feel so attached – like a ligament – to the whole shebang of human experience”. These poems include subject matter of all kinds, and to read them can feel like being led through the chaos of contemporary life by a warm yet incisive mind. Publishers Weekly

"The fielding of automated flight controls and weapons systems in fighter aircraft from 1950 to 1980 challenged the significance ascribed to several of the pilots' historical skillsets, such as superb hand-eye coordination--required for aggressive stick-and-rudder maneuvering--and perfect eyesight and crack marksmanship--required for long-range visual detection and destruction of the enemy. Highly automated systems would, proponents argued, simplify the pilot's tasks while increasing his lethality in the air, thereby opening fighter aviation to broader segments of the population. However, these new systems often required new, unique skills, which the pilots struggled to identify and develop. Moreover, the challenges that accompanied these technologies were not restricted to individual fighter cockpits, but rather extended across the pilots' tactical formations, altering the social norms that had governed the fighter pilot profession since its establishment. In the end, the skills that made a fighter pilot great in 1980 bore little resemblance to those of even thirty years prior, despite the precepts embedded within the "myth of the fighter pilot." As such, this history illuminates the rich interaction between human and machine that often accompanies automation in the workplace. It is broadly applicable to other enterprises confronting increased automation, from remotely piloted aviation to Google cars. It should appeal to those interested in the history of technology and automation, as well as the general population of military aviation enthusiasts."--Provided by publisher.

Set in a time that could very well be today, in a world rocked by thermonuclear war. Chase's father Jack is a highly trained sniper in the US military, and all he had ever wanted was to be just like him. His father relents, and from a young age trains Chase how to survive in the wild. As he grows older he will also teach him the many secrets of his deadly trade. After spending eight months in a bomb shelter, Chase will take his first step in the daunting 2600 mile trek from Hartford Alabama to Fairfield Idaho. There he will hopefully find his father waiting for him at their family's cabin on Soldier Mountain. He won't be making this harrowing journey alone, though. Along the way he will meet a colourful cast of characters; and under tragic circumstances, one very special dog that he will raise from a pup. In an endless struggle against man, animal, and nature, will Chase have what it takes to survive? To protect the ones he loves? Take the breathtaking journey, but be prepared to be emotionally exhausted by the time the book reaches its heart wrenching conclusion; one that will leave you wishing that the tale didn't have to end...but at least you will be able to stop holding your breath.
