The mysterious existence called life after death that lurks waiting beyond the reef that all humankind must eventually cross sometimes may encroach onto the mortal shores that humans inhabit and adjust events that weak mortals have misused. Tales told by sailors seems to indicate that strange eerie powers cross this reef in reverse and make adjustments that are beyond the power of mortal humans to change. The legends told by seafaring men are filled with such mysterious tales such as the legend of the Flying Dutchman and others. The battle of the North Atlantic was a generator of such events and is the stage for this tale about restless ghosts.

It was 1917 and World War 1 was in its third year, and the German Imperial Navy submarine U-28 slipped silently through the cold waters of the North Sea. Inside the metal cylinder, the crew went about their duties with grim determination. "Herr Kapitän," the navigation officer approached the stocky commander. "We are on course for the English shipping lanes as ordered." Kapitän Erich Löwenhart nodded curtly. "Very good, Oberleutnant. Keep me updated on our position." The young officer saluted crisply. "Jawohl!" The predatory U-boat continued its submerged patrol, hunting for Allied merchant vessels carrying munitions and supplies to aid the British war effort. The seamen’s nerves were taut as stretched cables, knowing their small undersea craft could easily become a steel coffin if struck by an enemy torpedo or depth charge. Hours ticked slowly by in the muggy, oil-scented confines of the U-boat. The only sounds were the eerie groans and pings of the metal hull and the constant thrum of the electric motors. "Herr Kapitän, there is an enemy submarine just ahead, heading our way!" said the Oberleutnant as he wiped the sweat from his forehead, knowing death was staring right at them.

On the night of 13/14 October 1939, the German commander of U-boat U-47, Günther Prien, steered past the sunken block ships and chains which inadequately protected the British naval base at Scapa Flow in the Orkney Islands. The U-Boat sank the old British World War I battleship HMS Royal Oak and then escaped into the North Sea. The loss of the Royal Oak was insignificant in naval terms though over 800 men perished with her, however this was a bitter blow to British moral.

The accepted historical narrative of the Second World War predominantly assigns U-boats to the so-called 'Battle of the Atlantic', almost as if the struggle over convoys between the new world and the old can be viewed in isolation from simultaneous events on land and in the air. This has become an almost accepted error. The U-boats war did not exist solely between 1940 and 1943, nor did the Atlantic battle occur in seclusion from other theatres of action. The story of Germany's second U-boat war began on the first day of hostilities with Britain and France and ended with the final torpedo sinking on 7 May 1945. U-boats were active in nearly every theatre of operation in which the Wehrmacht served, and within all but the Southern Ocean. Moreover, these deployments were not undertaken in isolation from one another; instead they were frequently interconnected in what became an increasingly inefficient German naval strategy. This fascinating new book places each theatre of action in which U-boats were deployed into the broader context of the Second World War in its entirety while also studying the interdependence of the various geographic deployments. It illustrates the U-boats' often direct relationship with land, sea and aerial campaigns of both the Allied and Axis powers, dispels certain accepted mythologies, and reveals how the ultimate failure of the U-boats stemmed as much from chaotic German military and industrial mismanagement as it did from Allied advances in code-breaking and weaponry.
