The definitive reference on the properties and applications of polyolefin blends Polyolefins account for more than half of total plastics consumption in the world. In recent years, usage of and research on polyolefin blends have increased significantly due to new applications in medicine, packaging, and other fields and the development of novel polyolefins. With a special emphasis on nano- and micro-structures of crystals and phase morphology, Polyolefin Blends condenses and consolidates current information on polyolefins so that the reader can compare, select, and integrate a material solution. Focusing exclusively on the fundamental aspects as well as applications of polyolefin blends, this authoritative reference: * Features an introductory chapter that serves as a guide to polyolefin blends * Includes chapters covering formulation design, processing, characterization, modeling and simulation, engineering performance properties, and applications * Covers polyolefin/polyolefin blends and polyolefin/non-polyolefin blends * Discusses miscibility, phase behavior, functionalization, compatibilization, microstructure, crystallization, hierarchical morphology, and physical and mechanical properties * Covers new research trends including in-situ reactor blending and reactive processing, such as compatibilization/functionalization in the melt * Contains practical examples from open literature sources and commercial products With chapters contributed by leading experts from several countries, this is a must-have reference for scientists and engineers conducting research on polyolefin blends and for professionals in medical, packaging, and other commodity fields. It is also an excellent text for graduate students studying polymer science and polymer processing.

Phase separation in complex fluids such as polymers has been the subject of several experimental and theoretical studies in recent years. Understanding the phase separation mechanisms and controlling morphological evolution are very important for designing various advanced materials with novel mechanical, optical, electrical, and transport properties. In polymer blends, dynamic asymmetry is induced by a large difference in glass transition temperature. In this work, phase separation behavior of ternary blends of polystyrene/poly(vinyl methyl ether)/polyisoprene, PS/PVME/PI, and polystyrene/poly(vinyl methyl ether)/poly(ethyl methacrylate), PS/PVME/PEMA are investigated. Ternary blends of PS/PVME/PI and PS/PVME/PEMA exhibit complex phase separation behavior since PS and PVME have a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) behavior, while PI and PS (or PVME), PEMA and PS (or PVME) have upper critical solution temperature (UCST) behavior. 2D and 3D phase diagrams for these two ternary systems were plotted by both Flory-Huggins incompressible and regular solution compressible models. Casting the solutions of PS/PVME/PI and PS/PVME/PEMA blends form two phase-separated domains in most compositions: (i) PI-rich or PEMA rich, and (ii) PS/PVME-rich. Post-annealing of such samples leads to the second-stage phase separation due to unfavorable interaction of PS and PVME at temperatures about 100°C. Such behavior that is observed for the first time provides a new potential method for making different morphologies with the same system by changing annealing parameters and composition. Washing one polymer at a time using a selective solvent is used to study the morphology of ternary blends. Optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy are used to study the kinetics and morphology of viscoelastic phase separation (VPS) in ternary blends.

Polyolefin blends represent a vital material field due to their economic and commercial importance. Potential new properties such as lighter weight, lower cost and higher strength, motivate research to investigate blends of saturated hydrocarbon polymers. However, many questions remain concerning how polymer chain structure and packing influence local thermodynamics, or more specifically, the interplay between enthalpy and entropy, which ultimately control bulk phase behavior. Solid-state NMR has proven to be an essential tool in these studies due to its ability to selectively observe molecular level conformations and dynamics without isotopic labeling. Combinations of basic and advanced variable temperature studies such as 1D and 2D 13C cross-polarization exchange experiments, static 2H lineshape analysis, 1H relaxation/spin-diffusion measurements, and 129Xe experiments were applied in this work. Several systems were studied, including 50/50 weight percent blends of polyisobutylene with polyethylene-co-1-butene, polyisobutylene with head-to-head polypropylene, and atactic polypropylene with the same polyethylene-co-1-butene samples. The results were used to determine a relationship between miscibility, length scales of mixing, and timescales/length scales of the glass transition.
