The essential sign of spring in northern latitudes is the swelling of the buds upon the trees, and those of the sturdy bushes which the husbandman uses for hedges. The appearance of flowers, except to the experienced eye, cannot always be depended upon. Many that would be thought heralds of the new season are in reality relics of the year that has departed, --epitaphs on the summer of six months before, --memorials rather than prophecies. Such is the case with the wall-flower, which is often seen plentifully in bloom in January, unless the winter be very severe, --the succession of flowers from side-shoots having proceeded uninterruptedly perhaps since the previous May. This long-protracted flow of bloom is usually attributable to the flowers being gathered for lovetokens or personal pleasure, and thus hindered from fulfilling the grand purpose for which all flowers are in every case developed, namely, the origination of seed from which new plants shall be reared, to take the place of the parents, when the latter lie withered and dead. As long as a plant is hindered from proceeding with the due preparation of its intended. seeds, so long will it persist in its efforts, and renew them, striving, till all its vitality is exhausted, to leave if it be only a single voucher of its honest toil. A thousand times have I noticed this wonderful and quiet energy in operation. Excerpt from Observations on the Phenomena of Plant Life: A Paper Presented to the Massachusetts Board of Agriculture The observations concerning The Circulation of Sap in Plants, which I had the honor of presenting before the Board of Agriculture at their last country meeting, were so kindly received at the time, and awakened so much interest after their publication, that I have found it impossible to refrain from further investigations upon the phenomena of plant-life. Among the subjects to which special attention has been directed during the year, the following may be enumerated, viz.: First. The structure, composition and arrangement of the winter-buds of hardy trees and shrubs. Specimens for study were collected, in January and February last, from one hun dred and forty species, and some facts of interest recorded. Second. The percentage of water to be found in the branches and roots of trees during their annual period of repose, as well as when in active growth. "Phenomena of Plant Life," by Leo H. Grindon, of Manchester, in which the development from the seed, through the changing seasons of the year, is very pleasantly set forth. There is nothing absolutely new in it; but not a little instruction is arrayed in such a manner that the mind takes it with a kind of refreshment. The last article in the book, on " The Oak " (an appendix to the others), seems to be the initial one of another series, intended by the author to mark out the features of such trees as belong to Britain, inquiring into the specialties that give them their several places in art and poetry. As the present volume is stereotyped, I hope the publishers will be induced to add the remainder of the series to subsequent editions. I notice in this paper that the writer puts it as a postulate that "the mind of that man grows up very differently who in his youth is accustomed to contemplate oaks, than that of him whose boyhood is spent near pines and firs," and this suggests climatic influences in fashioning history which Mr. Kingsley has brought into the sphere of romance in his new novel, "Hereward, the Last of the English," lately issued, with the author's sanction, by Ticknor & Fields.- Round Table, Volume 3
