Excerpt from Dissertations and Discussions, Vol. 3 of 3: Political, Philosophical, and Historical The instantaneous disappearance of virtues, dominions, princedoms, powers, - of all the men who by their Station, or their capacity, or their habits of government, or even their habits of business, had a claim to rule the affairs of their country, - was succeeded by the sudden lifting-up to supreme power of men, who, with the single exception of my illustrious friend M. Arago, were either wholly unknown before in any way, even to their very names and existence; or who were known as authors of no great fame; or who were known as of so indifferent reputation, that they had better have not been known at all; and M. Arago, the solitary exception to this actual or desirable obscurity, himself known in the world of science alone. Problems In Philosophy Classic Reprint written by John Bascom and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-12-25 with Philosophy categories.

Excerpt from Problems in Philosophy This volume may seem to be constructed on the idea of gathering up the fragments that nothing may be lost. This precept, however, wise as it often is, does not express the law of production in the present case. A few points in philosophy invited more clear or more thorough state ment. This labor I chose to undertake directly and briefly, rather than to attempt it as a part of a more ex tended and systematic work. One evil in philosophy is the accumulation of fruitless discussions. A few positions fortunately taken may be easily lost in their practical value by the extended treatises which accompany them, traversing old ground with no sufl'icient reward. Philoso phy, above most topics, calls for an explicit statement of a few fundamental principles, and a pushing of inquiry in reference to them, till some satisfactory conclusion is reached. The present volume aims to make, in the most direct way, a contribution on the more obscure topics of philosophy. What it has to say is not, taken collectively, extended, and may be still farther reduced by the reader by confining his attention to the one or more subjects which may appeal directly to him. Only one of these discussions - that on liberty - has appeared elsewhere, and that essay has been somewhat modified. Excerpt from The Spectrum of Truth The following pages have no pretension to be a history of philosophy, or to discuss or appraise the merits of different theories. All that is aimed at is to provide a conspectus within the smallest possible compass, of the characteristic attitude of the chief philosophical systems towards the great speculative questions with which philosophy is directly concerned. Recent, and regrettable theological controversies have turned mainly upon certain great questions that fall strictly within the province of philosophy, and some simple apparatus such as is here provided is a necessary equipment for those who have made no special study of the subjects, but desire to form an Opinion of the merits of the questions at issue. And it is hoped that the condensed form of this slight sketch may be of use even to students of philosophy by bringing into prominence certain points of agreement and harmony which are for the most part overlaid and obscured by lengthy disquisitions, but which show clearly in a mere map of the country. Excerpt from Philosophical Realism Philosophy, not theology and religion, is the writer's quest; and an argument on God and crea tion is introduced only for the sake of philosophy, which required it as a condition of intellectual continuity and final unity of conception. As it is a beautiful custom for authors in their preface to designate the sources and lines of light Whence their own radiance, which might not else be clearly seen in some cases, the present writer wishes to say that he is indebted to all thinkers who have gone before him, both the known and the (to him) great unknown; and he sincerely thanks them for their inestimable benefactions, of the value of which to him, as indicated in this volume, he invites the philosophic public to judge, if it can find time, now or in the future. Excerpt from Greek Philosophy: Thales to Plato It is unfortunate in some respects that I have been obliged to deal with certain parts of the subject in a form which does not admit of detailed argument and still less of controversy. The second edition of my Early Greek Philosophy (referred to as E. Gr. Ph.2) makes this in large measure unnecessary in Book I but there are certain parts of Book III. Where I have had to state my conclusions baldly in the hope that I may have a later opportunity of discussing their grounds. My chief aim for the present has been to assist students who wish to acquire a firsthand knowledge of what Plato actually says in the dialogues of his maturity. So long as they are content to know something of the Republic and the earlier dialogues, Platonism must be a sealed book to them. Introduction To The History Of Modern Philosophy Classic Reprint written by Arthur Stone Dewing and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-01-05 with Philosophy categories.

Excerpt from Introduction to the History of Modern Philosophy There are at the present time accessible to the English reader many excellent and comprehensive histories of philoso phy. And the only reason for treating the subject again has arisen from the h0pe that a more simple treatment would prove useful to those readers unfamiliar with the technicalities of recent philosophical systems. For various reasons the bistori cal side serves as perhaps the only broad and permanently valuable approach to the whole field of philosophy, while it is a firm conviction with many that some slight acquaintance with the development of philosophical problems is indispensable to their appreciation. This work is intended as an introduction to the subject, and is not the expression of a critical or recon structive attitude; it makes no attempt to trace the logico genetic development of modern thought, nor does it pretend to consider every aspect of historical development.
