Whether they announce their subject as the Organon of Discovery, or as the Grammar of Assent, they are at one in the belief that it may be of service at some stage in the ascertainment of truth. To whatever extent they may carry their absorption in grammatical detail, however prone they may be to imply that truth is a bright emanation from the parts of speech, and was materially affected at the Tower of Babel by the Confusion of Tongues, they admit (when they are put to it) that it is justness of representation - precision in the correspondence between a state of mind and the original of which it is a forecast or a copy. The Understanding of Faith (1974) is certainly Schillebeeckx's most incisive English publication on theological hermeneutics. It contains his principal ideas on this subject, in which he progressively evolved the hermeneutic thinking that he was to apply in due course in his famous Jesus books. The book centres on two issues: how should the Christian message of God's kingdom be read in our day and age, and can a present-day interpretation of that message still be considered Christian? In short, what are the possibilities and limits of the understanding of faith in our modern age? Of course, hermeneutics as such was not new to Christian theology. Exegetes had been exploring interpretive processes for some time. Schillebeeckx's innovation was to extend hermeneutic thinking to the possibilities and limits of interpreting the entire Christian tradition, including its definition in systematic theology. Inspired by the early Jürgen Habermas's 'new critical theory', Schillebeeckx also expands criticism of ideology in various directions. This was to influence generations of theologians after him, right up the present day.

Everyone knows Shakespeare to be the exemplary poet of love, but how many celebrate his clarifying expressions of hatred? How many of us do not at some time feel that we have come away from his plays transformed by hate and washed clean by savage indignation? Saval fills the great gap in the interpretation of Shakespeare’s unsocial feelings. The book asserts that emotions, as Aristotle claims in the Rhetoric, are connected to judgments. The literary criticism of anger and hate provides an alternative vision of the experience of Shakespeare’s theater as an intensification of human experience that takes us far beyond criticism’s traditional contexts of character, culture, and ethics. Above all, it reminds us why Shakespeare is the exemplary creator of that rare yet pleasurable thing: a good hater.
