Bisherige wissenschaftstheoretische Studien ließen die Chemie meist außen vor. Obwohl die Lehre der Stoffe und Strukturen eine Wissenschaft ist, die ihr Forschungsfeld stetig erweitert, alltagsrelevant und durchaus erfolgreich ist, scheint gerade das philosophische Interesse an dieser naturwissenschaftlichen Disziplin kaum vorhanden zu sein. "Wissenschaft der Synthese - Ein Ansatz zur wissenschaftsphilosophischen Betrachtung der Chemie" ist nun der Versuch eine Wissenschaftsphilosophie zu entwickeln, die auf der charakteristischen Methode der Chemie - der Synthese - basiert. Dazu werden neben einer genuin wissenschaftstheoretischen Betrachtung ebenfalls historische, sowie epistemologische Aspekte berücksichtigt und weiterentwickelt. Der hier entwickelte Ansatz einer Wissenschaftsphilosophie ist dabei eng an das Forschungsgeflecht der Synthesechemie selbst gekoppelt und weist darüber hinaus eine Nähe zur französischen Epistemologie auf. Er grenzt sich damit erfolgreich von einigen immanenten wissenschaftstheoretischen Positionen ab und versucht in Bezug auf die Synthesechemie ein alternatives Konzept zu präsentieren.

Im Rahmen einer breiteren Neubewertung der neukantianischen Bewegung unternimmt dieses Buch die Aufgabe, Wilhelm Windelbands philosophische Bemühungen zu rekonstruieren. Windelbands philosophisches Programm konzentrierte sich auf die Synthese von zwei scheinbar gegensätzlichen Kräften: Transzendentalphilosophie und Geschichtsbewusstsein. Er besaß ein ausgeprägtes Bewusstsein für die dem historischen Denken innewohnenden Verwicklungen und die zwingende Notwendigkeit, die Transzendentalphilosophie im Sinne einer echten Geschichtsphilosophie neu zu formulieren. Diese konzeptionelle Entwicklung führt sein philosophisches Programm schließlich von seinen ursprünglichen neukantianischen Wurzeln weg und lässt eine neue Form des Neo-Hegelianismus entstehen.
