Following al-Fārābī’s approach, Ibn Sīnā (d. 428/1037) undertakes a new foundation of the First Philosophy based on his own critical systematisation of the Aristotelian theory of science, yielding the result that metaphysics is only possible as a transcendental science, i.e. that not only the subject-matter of metaphysics and its properties but also the arguments by which the first principles of knowledge are defended must be transcendental. This book provides the first systematic reconstruction of Ibn Sīnā’s concept of metaphysics, and, given the considerable influence his achievement had on the Islamic tradition as well as on scholastic philosophers, it is relevant to the study of the history of metaphysics, Islamic theology (kalām), and Arabic philosophy.

Die vorliegende Arbeit gehort zur Reihe der Untersuchungen uber den Marxismus-Leninismus in den nicht-sowjetischen kommunistischen Liin dern Europas, welche im Auftrag des Osteuropa Instituts an der Uni versiHit Freiburg/Schweiz in Angriff genommen sind. 1m Gegensatz zu den fruher veroffentlichten Werken handelt es sich jedoch nicht um eine vollstandige Monographie, sondern um eine Vorarbeit. Sie besteht im wesentlichen in einer Bibliographie des jugoslawischen philosophischen Schrifttums seit 1945 und in einer Ubersicht sowohl des organisatori schen Rahmens als auch der Literatur. Der Verfasser bereitet jetzt, auf Grund der hier zusammengefaBten Ergebnisse, eine umfassende Mono graphie der genannten Art vor. Die Veroffentlichung erfolgt in der Hoffnung, daB diese meines Wissens erste und bisher einzige Einfuhrung in den jugoslawischen Marxismus Leninismus auch den anderen Forschern auf diesem Gebiet, sowohl in Jugoslawien als auch im Ausland, nutzlich sein durfte. Es ist fur mich eine angenehme Pflicht jenen Personen und Institutionen zu danken, ohne deren Hilfe dieses Buch nicht Mtte geschrieben werden konnen. The purpose of this anthology is to bring together in one volume some of the texts published in the series "Werkprofile", which focus on Kant’s relationship to his philosophical contemporaries and predecessors, and to make them accessible to a wider audience in English. In doing so, the volume is aimed at those who have an interest in better understanding the premises of Kant's philosophy, its historical context, and the development of many of Kant’s fundamental ideas. As it is often hard to glean philosophical motivation directly from reading Kant’s texts, understanding Kant’s commitment to answering certain questions and his silence on others, requires a historical approach. This broader purview will also be helpful for grasping deeper systematic questions at work throughout Kant’s philosophy. The anthology thus aims at inviting a more wide-angled view of Kant’s philosophy by focusing on overlooked references and historical figures. Scholarship on these references is still at an early stage, even though important steps have been taken in this direction in recent years. The aim of our volume is to build on this development and to supplement and expand the content of existing research.

Presented here in a new translation, with a historical introduction by the translators, Fear and Trembling and Repetition are the most poetic and personal of Søren Kierkegaard's pseudonymous writings. Published in 1843 and written under the names Johannes de Silentio and Constantine Constantius, respectively, the books demonstrate Kierkegaard's transmutation of the personal into the lyrically religious. Each work uses as a point of departure Kierkegaard's breaking of his engagement to Regine Olsen--his sacrifice of "that single individual." From this beginning Fear and Trembling becomes an exploration of the faith that transcends the ethical, as in Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son Isaac at God's command. This faith, which persists in the face of the absurd, is rewarded finally by the return of all that the faithful one is willing to sacrifice. Repetition discusses the most profound implications of unity of personhood and of identity within change, beginning with the ironic story of a young poet who cannot fulfill the ethical claims of his engagement because of the possible consequences of his marriage. The poet finally despairs of repetition (renewal) in the ethical sphere, as does his advisor and friend Constantius in the aesthetic sphere. The book ends with Constantius' intimation of a third kind of repetition--in the religious sphere.
