Considered a groundbreaking medical discovery at the time Osteopathy is still a respected profession and is on the border between conventional and complementary medicine. In this book the founder of Osteopathy, Andrew Taylor Still, lays out the philosophies behind the art. Ahead of his time in such areas as belief in preventative care and disgust at the occasionally horrific side effects of the then-practices of conventional medicine AT Still decided (as in other areas of his life) to improve things rather than complain. Still was an interesting individual, prone to inventing his way around problems. He was also a doctor, author, surgeon, lawmaker and founder of a university. This antiquarian volume contains Andrew Taylor Still’s 1902 treatise, "The Philosophy and Mechanical Principles of Osteopathy". Within this text, Still explores the principles that differentiate osteopathy from allopathy - and explains how to treat a variety of ailments and diseases. This detailed and accessible book written by the father of osteopathy himself is highly recommended for those with an interest in the subject. It will be of special utility to massage therapists and practitioners of allied treatments. Contents include: “My Authorities”, “Age of Osteopathy”, “Demand for Progress”, “Truth is Truth”, “Man is Triune”, “Trash”, “Osteopathy”, “Nature is Health”, “Our Relation to Other Systems”, “Important Studies”, etcetera. Many antiquarian books such as this are increasingly hard to come by and expensive, and it is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition. It comes complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author.

Philosophy of Osteopathy by A. T. (Andrew Taylor) Still NOT A WORK OF COMPILATION. To readers of my book on the Philosophy of Osteopathy, I wish to say that I will not tire you with a book of compilations just to sell to the anxious reader. As I have spent thirty years of my life reading and following rules and remedies used for curing, and learned in sorrow it was useless to listen to their claims, for instead of getting good, I obtained much harm therefrom, I asked for, and obtained a mental divorce from them, and I want it to be understood that drugs and I are as far apart as the East is from the West; now, and forever. Henceforth I will follow the dictates of nature in all I say or write. AUTHORS QUOTED. I quote no authors but God and experience when I write, or lecture to the classes or the masses, because no book written by medical writers can be of much use to us, and it would be very foolish to look to them for advice and instruction on a science they know nothing of. They are illy able to advise for themselves, they have never been asked to advise us, and I am free to say but few persons who have been pupils of my school have tried to get wisdom from medical writers and apply it as worthy to be taught as any part of Osteopathy, philosophy or practice. Several books have been compiled, called "Principles of Osteopathy." They may sell but will fail to give the knowledge the student desires. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

It is my object in this work to teach principles as I understand them, and not rules. I do not instruct the student to punch or pull a certain bone, nerve or muscle for a certain disease, but by a knowledge of the normal and abnormal, I hope to give a specific knowledge for all diseases. Excerpt from Osteopathy Illustrated: A Drugless System of Healing It is not the design of this work to embrace all other sciences and specialties, in order to make a Show of wisdom our sole object being to present the reasons for the application of this science, and to demonstrate its place among other means of healing. If the reader will carefully survey the premises, investigate the philosophy and note the results, a just estimate of the value of the science may be placed on it, and its proper place assigned for it. Unobstructed circulation of fluids to and from the heart, in all parts of the body, and uniting the forces and removing the pressure, constitute the basic principles of this philosophy, and the means of promoting these ends is the only object of this book.
