Mason W. Gross, the sixteenth president of Rutgers University, was a unique man who left his imprint on the university. During his presidency, Rutgers expanded from a student body of 18,000 to 30,000, the budget grew from $18 million to $68 million, an enormous construction program enhanced and enlarged the campuses at Newark, New Brunswick, and Camden, and new professional schools were founded. In effect, Gross presided over the transformation of Rutgers from a private university rooted in the colonial past to one of the largest state universities in the post-industrial present. Yet, Gross was a relaxed and much admired leader whose tenure spawned excellence in research coupled with civility in relations among students, faculty and administrators. The speeches of Mason W. Gross are of more than ordinary interest and merit for two reasons. One is that he wrote them all himself. Woodrow Wilson was the last president of the United States who had no speechwriter. While this is less frequently characteristic of college presidents, it is a growing phenomenon. The second reason for the unique quality of his speeches is that Gross was essentially a teacher and student of philosophy. He was only incidentally an administrator, a title he disliked as being akin to 'bureaucrat.' The addresses selected for this volume were culled from some three hundred that were delivered between 1949 and 1971. The speeches were chosen to reflect diverse themes and occasions. Their subjects range from ideas on education to thoughts about urban planning, and the occasions from commencement addresses to appearances before national organizations. Effortlessly urbane and civilized, always gracious and courteous, Mason W. Gross was a teacher and philosopher, a democrat and an aristocrat. In his new introduction, Irving Louis Horowitz, traces the philosophical sources of Mason Gross' thought as well as his practical implementation of those influences. Richard P. McCormick, was professor of history at Rutgers University from 1948 to 1982. He is the author of The Presidential Game: The Origins of American Presidential Politics and The Second American Party System: Party Formation in the Jacksonian Era. Richard Schlatter, now deceased, was professor of history at Rutgers University, and served as provost of the university under Mason Gross. Irving Louis Horowitz is Hannah Arendt Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Sociology and Political Science at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, and chairman and editorial director of Transaction Publishers. His books include Radicalism and the Revolt Against Reason and Taking Lives: Genocide and State Power.

This comparative history of the higher education systems in Poland, East Germany, and the Czech lands reveals an unexpected diversity within East European stalinism. With information gleaned from archives in each of these places, John Connelly offers a valuable case study showing how totalitarian states adapt their policies to the contours of the societies they rule. The Communist dictum that universities be purged of "bourgeois elements" was accomplished most fully in East Germany, where more and more students came from worker and peasant backgrounds. But the Polish Party kept potentially disloyal professors on the job in the futile hope that they would train a new intelligentsia, and Czech stalinists failed to make worker and peasant students a majority at Czech universities. Connelly accounts for these differences by exploring the prestalinist heritage of these countries, and particularly their experiences in World War II. The failure of Polish and Czech leaders to transform their universities became particularly evident during the crises of 1968 and 1989, when university students spearheaded reform movements. In East Germany, by contrast, universities remained true to the state to the end, and students were notably absent from the revolution of 1989.

One can often encounter an opinion that Polish scientific (or analytic) philosophy (or the Lvov-Warsaw School) deserves to be much better known than actually is. This book is thought as a response to such a claim. The papers collected in this volume are divided into two parts: Background and Influence and History and Systematics. However, there is no sharp borderline between themes which are touched in both parts. Generally speaking, all papers of the first part relate the Lvov-Warsaw School to some philosophical movements (Brentanism, phenomenology and Marxism) external to it whereas the papers collected in the second one focus on internal issues connected with the school (only Roberto Poli takes into account Brentano's views in his discussion of reism). Since the Polish school of mathematical logic is much better known than the Polish analytic philosophy we decided to omit here any treatment of the former. Thus, this collection centers on purely philosophical matters. We projected this volume not as an exhaustive panorama of Polish analytic philosophy but rather as a series of essays on particular persons or topic. As a result one can find here papers on Twardowski. Ajdukiewicz, Kotarbinski, Tarski and Lukasiewicz as well as on ethics on science, nominalism, and the methodology of psychology. We hope that this book will contribute to a better knowledge and evaluation of Polish achievements in analytic philosophy. We would like to express our gratitude to Professor Leszek Nowak, the editor-in-chief of Poznan Studies in the Philosophy of the Sciences and the Humanities, who initiated the idea of the collection and helped in its preparation.

Exile and Restoration in Jewish Thought presents the history of an idea originating at the intersection of Judaic piety and the social history of the Jews: faith in a protective sovereign deity amid contrary conditions. Exiled primordially (Eden), during the Patriarchal era, in the sixth century bce, and from the first century to the twentieth, the Jewish experience of alienation has been the historical backdrop against which affirmations of divine benevolence have been constructed. While histories of Jewish thought have tended to accentuate the speculative creativity of medieval and modern Jewish philosophers, the intellectual tradition can come into focus only with attention to these thinkers' understanding of diaspora and persecution. Ralph Keen describes the distinguishing feature of Jewish thought as a religious hermeneutic in which the primitive promise made to Abraham is preserved not just as a pious memory but as a certain hope for eventual restoration. The collaborative effort of scholars from Russia and the United States, this book reevaluates the history of postwar Eastern Europe from 1944 to 1949, incorporating information gleaned from newly opened archives in Eastern Europe. For nearly five decades, the countries of Yugoslavia, Poland, Albania, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, and the Soviet zone of Germany were forced to live behind the ?iron curtain.?
