Biographical note: Sissy Helff teaches at the Goethe-University Frankfurt/M. in the department of New English Literatures. Her most recent publications include her monograph”Unreliable Truths: Transcultural Homeworlds in Indian Women' s Fiction of the Diaspora“(2012) as well as several coedited volumes. She currently works on a book dealing with the image of the refugee in the British writing and a collection of essays dealing with Alice in Wonderland adaptations. Stefanie Michels is professor for history at the University of Düsseldorf. She has dealt with postcolonial readings of photographies about colonial Black German soldiers in a German-langugage monograph in 2009 (”Schwarze deutsche Kolonialsoldaten. Mehrdeutige Repräsentationsräume und früher Kosmopolitismus“, trancript) alongside a number of articles on photography and German colonialism.

How is photography connected to global practices? Historically, photographs of Indigenous Australians were produced in unequal and exploitative circumstances. Today, however, such images represent a rich cultural heritage for descendants, who see them in distinctive and positive ways. Calling the shots brings together researchers who are using this rich archive to explore Aboriginal history, to identify relatives, and to reclaim culture. It reverses the colonial gaze to focus on the interactions between photographer and Indigenous people — and the living meanings the photos have today. The result is a fresh perspective on Australia’s past, and on present-day Indigenous identities. Innovative in three ways, Calling the shots incorporates Indigenous perspectives on the photographic process and especially the meaning of the photographic archive. In archaeology, photography is mainly used as a technique for gathering data and evidence. Within the framework of the research project '(in)site, site-specific photography revisited' the relationship between photography and archaeology, or broader, history is explored. How do photographers visualize history? What is the importance of place, particularly the place that remains after the event took place? How do photographers or artists use photography to depict the past, when time has become 'past time'? These articles and portfolios explore, both on practical and theoretical level, how history can be captured. The research project is an attempt to redefine the traditional relationship between archaeology and photography in order to produce new forms of image-making more adapted to contemporary visual culture. The project considers photography as a practice in which a picture is shaped and constructed by the photographer, not a practice in which a picture is mechanically taken.
