Understanding, identifying and influencing the biologicalsystems are the primary objectives of chemical biology. From this perspective, metal complexes havealways been of great assistance to chemical biologists, for example, in structural identificationand purification of essential biomolecules, for visualizing cellular organelles or to inhibitspecific enzymes. This inorganic side of chemical biology, which continues to receive considerableattention, is referred to as inorganic chemical biology. Inorganic Chemical Biology: Principles, Techniques andApplications provides a comprehensive overview of the current and emerging role of metal complexes inchemical biology. Throughout all of the chapters there is a strong emphasis on fundamentaltheoretical chemistry and experiments that have been carried out in living cells or organisms. Outlooksfor the future applications of metal complexes in chemical biology are also discussed. Topics covered include: • Metal complexes as tools for structural biology • IMAC, AAS, XRF and MS as detection techniques for metals inchemical biology • Cell and organism imaging and probing DNA using metal andmetal carbonyl complexes • Detection of metal ions, anions and small molecules usingmetal complexes • Photo-release of metal ions in living cells • Metal complexes as enzyme inhibitors and catalysts inliving cells Written by a team of international experts, Inorganic ChemicalBiology: Principles, Techniques and Applications is a must-have for bioinorganic, bioorganometallic and medicinal chemists as well as chemical biologists working in both academia and industry.

Examining and historicizing the concept of "otherness" in both literature and criticism, Lisa Lowe explores representations of non-European cultures in British and French writings from the eighteenth through the twentieth century. Lowe traces the intersections of culture, class, and sexuality in Lady Mary Wortley Montagu’s Turkish Embassy Letters and Montesquieu’s Lettres persanes and discusses tropes of orientalism, racialism, and romanticism in Flaubert. She then turns to debates in Anglo-American and Indian criticism on Forster’s Passage to India and on the utopian projection of China in the poststructuralist theories of Julia Kristeva and Roland Barthes and in the journal Tel Quel.

Instabilities In Space And Laboratory Plasmas written by D. B. Melrose and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1989-03-16 with Science categories.

This book is an introductory account of instabilities in plasma. It concentrates on laboratory plasmas, such as those encountered in fusion research, and the space plasmas studied in physics of the magnetosphere and solar atmosphere. This account bridges the gap between a graduate textbook on plasma physics and specialist monographs. An important feature is the stress placed on the similarities between astrophysical and laboratory plasmas, which are traditionally regarded as quite separate. The natural way in which the author unifies the treatment gives a wider perspective to the subject. Professor Melrose is an expert in plasma astrophysics, and has already written a two-volume book on that topic.

This volume deals with the origins and rise of Christian pilgrimage cults in late antique Egypt. Part One covers the major theoretical issues in the study of Coptic pilgrimage, such as sacred landscape and shrines' catchment areas, while Part Two examines native Egyptian and Egyptian Jewish pilgrimage practices. Part Three investigates six major shrines, from Philae's diverse non-Christian devotees to the great pilgrim center of Abu Mina and a Thecla shrine on its route. Part Four looks at such diverse pilgrims' rites as oracles, chant, and stational liturgy, while Part Five brings in Athanasius's and an anonymous hagiographer's perspectives on pilgrimage in Egypt. The volume includes illustrations of the Abu Mina site, pilgrims' ampules from the Thecla shrine, as well as several maps.
