Excerpt from Physical Measurements, Vol. 1: A Laboratory Manual in General Physics for Colleges This manual presents the laboratory exercises of the Courses in General Physics offered at the University of California. It is printed in four parts, each part accompanied by appropriate tables. Parts I and II contain experiments on Heat, Properties of Matter, and Mechanics. Part III deals with Magnetism and Electricity, and Part IV is devoted to Sound and Light. While the manual is largely based upon the exercises printed in Physical Measurements in Properties of Matter and Heat-Minor and Elston, and Physical Measurements in Sound, Light and Electricity-Minor, it represents a revision in which the writer has attempted two things. First, to base the college laboratory work squarely upon the foundation afforded by a first course, and second, to omit exercises based upon topics which properly belong to the lecture demonstration and which experience has shown to be adequately treated there. The writer's predecessors, Professor Harold Whiting. Professor E. R. Drew, Professor Elmer E. Hall, Dr. T Sidney Elston, A. C. Alexander, G. K. Burgess, Brucc V. Hill, A. S. King, and T. C. McKay have all influenced the development of these exercises. Material has been freely drawn from the literature of the subject whether in magazine or text book form without specific credit being always indicated. Excerpt from Course of Experiments in Physical Measurement, Vol. 1 of 4: Density, Heat, Light, and Sound This book is intended to aid in the preparation of students for courses in civil, electrical, or mechanical engineering, and for advanced work in all branches of science requiring the use of accurate methods and instruments of precision. To this end, the course of experiments described, unlike that contained in most manuals published in this country, is exclusively devoted to quantitative physical determinations. Comparatively little use is made of the ordinary experimental demonstrations of well-known physical laws and principles, which, it is believed, are better suited to the lecture-room than to the laboratory. Most of the experiments consist in the determination of magnitudes wholly unknown to the students, and are made with instruments which they themselves have tested, in order that they may learn to depend upon their own observations. Attention has been paid throughout this book to the general methods which underlie all physical measurement, rather than to the special devices by which particular difficulties are overcome. A multidisciplinary reference of engineering measurement tools, techniques, and applications Volume 1 "When you can measure what you are speaking about, and express it in numbers, you know something about it; but when you cannot measure it, when you cannot express it in numbers, your knowledge is of a meager and unsatisfactory kind; it may be the beginning of knowledge, but you have scarcely in your thoughts advanced to the stage of science." Lord Kelvin Measurement falls at the heart of any engineering discipline and job function. Whether engineers are attempting to state requirements quantitatively and demonstrate compliance; to track progress and predict results; or to analyze costs and benefits, they must use the right tools and techniques to produce meaningful, useful data. The Handbook of Measurement in Science and Engineering is the most comprehensive, up-to-date reference set on engineering measurements beyond anything on the market today. Encyclopedic in scope, Volume 1 spans several disciplines Civil and Environmental Engineering, Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering, and Industrial Engineering and covers: New Measurement Techniques in Structural Health Monitoring Traffic Congestion Management Measurements in Environmental Engineering Dimensions, Surfaces, and Their Measurement Luminescent Method for Pressure Measurement Vibration Measurement Temperature Measurement Force Measurement Heat Transfer Measurements for Non-Boiling Two-Phase Flow Solar Energy Measurements Human Movement Measurements Physiological Flow Measurements GIS and Computer Mapping Seismic Testing of Highway Bridges Hydrology Measurements Mobile Source Emissions Testing Mass Properties Measurement Resistive Strain Measurement Devices Acoustics Measurements Pressure and Velocity Measurements Heat Flux Measurement Wind Energy Measurements Flow Measurement Statistical Quality Control Industrial Energy Efficiency Industrial Waste Auditing Vital for engineers, scientists, and technical managers in industry and government, Handbook of Measurement in Science and Engineering will also prove ideal for members of major engineering associations and academics and researchers at universities and laboratories.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1890 edition. Excerpt: ...By measuring the fall thus produced, the pressure of the vapor of various liquids at different temperatures may be determined. Another way to illustrate the pressure exerted by the vapor, of a liquid is to pour a little of the liquid into a flask, so that it may evaporate into the air which the flask contains. If the flask is corked tightly as soon as the liquid is poured in, a considerable pressure may be generated. In fact, explosions sometimes occur from this cause. To measure the pressure, a tube may be passed through the cork into some mercury in the bottom of the flask (see Fig. 67), and the liquid should be injected by means of a medicine-dropper passing through the cork beside this tube, so as to avoid losing the pressure generated by evaporation before the cork can be put into its place. It has been found by experiment that the quantity of liquid.which evaporates in a flask already containing air, and the pressure which it generates, are exactly the same as in a space from which the air has been completely exhausted. This discovery (known as Dalton's Law) is believed to show that the molecules of a gas occupy very little space in comparison with the space between them, into which a liquid may evaporate. In any case, the height to which the mercury column is raised in Fig. 67 is the same as its depression in Fig. 66, other things being equal. We shall make use of this fact to determine roughly the pressure of a vapor at various temperatures. We have seen that when a liquid evaporates into a confined space filled with air, the pressure of the air is increased. It is evident that in an open flask the air must expand until the combined pressure of the air and the vapor inside becomes equal to the atmospheric pressure outside. If...

Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.
