Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2017 in the subject Chemistry - Analytical Chemistry, grade: 3.0, , course: chemistry, language: English, abstract: This study was based on physico-chemical analysis of the oil content of Pycnanthus seed for its potential and industrial uses. Seeds were collected from a Pycnanthus tree at Awba-dam, UI Ibadan. The results obtained are oil extract 48%, the specific gravity 0.978, refractive index 1.4521, melting point 500C, the saponification value 245.44%, acid value 6.21mg(OH)/g oil, peroxide value 16.12mEq/kg and ester value 239.23. The iodine value of seed oil which placed the oil in the non-drying group was 84.94. Fatty acid composition of the seed oil showed the oil to be rich in lauric acid 64.72%, palmitic acid 13.97%, capric acid 4.99%, capryclic acid 4.40%, myristic acid 4.33% and stearic acid 1.93%. It also contained oleic acid 3.26% and linoleic acid 2.40%. The other fatty acids present in the oil are palmitoleic acid, Linolenic acid and Llignoceric acid. The seeds of the plant could be a source of industrial raw material.

In Ghana very little interest was shown in the insects of forest trees and products. But as forest practices have become more intensive so also have the pests on the crops increased and the damage caused increased to alarming proportions. Foresters are now becoming in creasingly aware of the immense havoc that some of these insects can cause. To aid the fight against the pests they have to be fully identified and studied so that effective control measures can be implemented. The impetus for this book was the desire to systematically organize the extant literature on the conservation of cultural property made of wood, from its beginnings before the Christian Era to the year 2000. Various published reviews and monographs, including Holzkonservierung (Wood Conserva tion) published by the senior author in 1988, have appeared over the years, especially in English and in German. They have provided exemplary treat merit of individual areas or aspects of wood conservation, but a comprehen sive, up-to-date exposition of historic and current developments has been lacking. The diverse professional fields of the authors, as well as their insights into methods of conservation and restoration of wood artifacts in Europe, North America, and Asia provided a solid basis for the success of this under taking. One of the goals during the examination of the literature was that not only well-known conservators and scientists from countries that are leaders in wood conservation should be represented, but that less well-known, often not as readily accessible contributions should also be included. Only in this manner was it possible to draw a comprehensive picture of the national and international state of wood conservation. The Art and Archaeology Technical Abstracts (AATA) of the Getty Institute were very helpful in our efforts to evaluate as many publications as possible.
