The vessels were perfused with Ringer's fluid, a continuous or a pulsatile stream at different temperatures, and the relations Of the external and internal pressures determined when the former was just sufficient to cause obliteration or to allow recommencement Of the flow. There we could see the construction of each separate part and could also find how these various parts are put together to form a completed engine. But if we had never before seen an engine, the whole machine would probably have little meaning or interest for us until we had watched it in action. We should then learn how the locomotive is supplied with water and coal. We Should see that the burning coal converts the water into steam, and that energy or power is thus furnished by which the pistons cause the drive wheels to revolve. All the pipes, cranks, levers, and rods we should find to be specially adapted for starting the locomotive, for keeping it in motion, or for stopping it. Excerpt from Studies From the Department of Physiology, Vol. 8: October, 1922 One point still remains to be discussed; that is, the bearing of the results with histamine upon the effects following occlusion of difierent vascular areas. The optical curves Show features in common, each presenting changes indicative of initial failure of normal dynamic relations. It might appear, therefore, that the occlusion efi'ects were caused by metabolic products with histamine - like action formed during the periods of stasis. There seems little doubt that such prod ucts may contribute to the effects of occlusion, but that they are not the main cause is evidenced, I believe, by the relatively large amounts of histamine necessary to initiate failure changes and by the observa tion recorded above that during the periods of reestablished circulation through the occluded part there are never indications of a dilating sub stance being carried into the general circulation.
