Excerpt from Phytologia, Vol. 80: January, 1996 Sandhills occur mainly in Tertiary marine deposits on ridge tops and upper slopes, and on Pleistocene deposits on terraces near streams. The deep sandy soils are of low fertility and, because of their porous nature, water and air move rapidly through them causing rapid drying. Overstory, midstory, and herbaceous vegetation is often sparse, allowing sun to reach the ground, and in some areas, there are no trees. Reflected glare from the sand is often intense. Trees, typically a combination of overstory pines and midstory oaks, are often stunted Lichens and mosses are usually plentiful on the bare soils, and the soils, where undisturbed, are often cryptogamic. Excerpt from Phytologia, Vol. 80: An International Journal to Expedite Plant Systematic, Phytogeographical and Ecological Publication; May, 1996 Nash (1901) did not cite any specimens, so the above Specimen can not be the holotype [article and Note 1 (international Code of Botanical Nomenclature, Nash (1912) did designate a lectotype for this name by effectively publishing [articles and (international Code of Botanical Nomenclature, the following type information, type locality: Three miles northeast of Whitman, Grant Co. Nebraska. There is only one specimen at NY in the type collection with this information on the label, therefore this specimen is the lectotype for Andropogon paucipilus. There is another specimen at NY with the same collector and collection number (p.a. Rydberg 1607) as the lectotype, but it has a different location (nebraska; Hooker Co.) and collection date (27 July This specimen is not the type and has caused some confusion. The specimen at us, designated as the type, is the same as the second specimen at NY (nebraska, Hooker Co., 27 July 1893, p.a. Rydberg so the specimen at US is not a type specimen.
