Excerpt from Piano-Forte Class Book: Containing Practical, Rudimental Lessons for Students of Music, and Especially Calculated to Be of Service to Those Who Are Preparing to Teach In the matter of musical knowledge, this book claims to impart nothing new, - to say nothing which has not been said before by some one, at some time; that, at the present day, would indeed, be a difficult matter. Neither is this work intended to take the place of a Piano Instruction Book, nor to supply the place of a teacher. No book can do that. The author has simply gathered together and arranged, in systematic form, those first principles of the Theory and Technique of music which are absolutely necessary to the intelligent progress of a pupil through his first few years of study, and endeavored to set this knowledge before him in a manner which, by its simplicity, will attract and, perhaps, lead him on to an interest in the deeper study of Harmony, and, event ually, to a thorough Musical Education. The greater portion of the work has been used in manuscript by the author for ten years but, from constant additions, it has become so troublesome for classes to copy, and the demand for it has grown so great among those of the writer's pupils who are teaching, as to make its publication a necessity. Teachers who use this work in schools must have blackboards with staffs upon them, and they should hold their recitations either weekly or semi-weekly. Teachers of village classes can usually obtain the use of some school room, or can have a blackboard in their lesson room, and meet their classes weekly. Very small classes can meet in any room, with music paper or music slates, upon which to write the exercises. Classes of very young children may commence at chapter second, and omit, until they are older, the chapters on the Metronome and Movements, and small por tions of other chapters, according to the judgment of the teacher. Excerpt from The Artist at the Piano In this collection of short essays on the art of musical interpretation at the pianoforte, an effort is made to evoke the spirit of the "higher criticism" which has done so much good in other fields. It is pitiable to contemplate the musical enthusiasms which are sacrificed on the arid wastes of matter-of-fact pedagogy. Students (especially child-students) gifted with musical imaginations and impulses, when confronted with the arithmetic tables of theoretic facts relating to the written statement of music, and the iron rules of "systems" and "methods," are as naturally stupid as they are talented in the Art-dimension. From the commencement (and more especially at the commencement) they should be trained to see with the mind as well as the eye, else the measure of their progress may prove, by inverse ratio, the measure of retrogression on the Art-plane. Another danger awaits the would-be artist at the pianoforte; he may be tempted to regard the very restricted possibilities of a mechanical instrument as the limit of his natural musical expression. There is an utterly mistaken idea abroad to-day in regard to the relationship which should exist between the pianist and his instrument.
