Excerpt from Pictures of Country Life The rain had fallen slowly and continuously since midnight - and it was now about noon, though a long controversy among the hands had decided the time, finally to be three o'clock; no one among the dozen of them has a watch, except Lem Lyon, the most ill-natured, the least accommodating of all the work-hands on the farm, and no man ventured to inquire of him, for he was more than ordinarily unamiable to-day, and lay on the barn-floor apart from his work-mates, with a bundle of oat-straw for his pillow, and his hat pulled over his eyes, taking no part in the discussion about the time, and affecting to hear nothing of it. One after another stepped forth, and essayed to see his shadow, but in vain - one after another looked up at the sky, and guessed at the whereabouts of the sun, but it was only guessing, for many a day has looked brighter after sunset than did that one at high moon. There was a half-holiday among the men, and as it had happened to fall the day after Sunday, it was less welcome than as if it had brought a log-rolling, brush-burning, or stone quarrying with it, for people little used to leisure are apt to find it lying heavily on their hands. Excerpt from From Carpathian to Pindus: Pictures of Roumanian Country Life The present book I address to the British public, who, during my stay in the United Kingdom, ever impressed me as eager to know and to learn, and who have plied me with hundreds of questions about the Roumanians, of whom indeed, and quite naturally, they knew but little. This volume is not intended as a book of controversy or polemics, it does not pretend to fight out the cause of the Roumanian nation, it simply aims at showing and describing what the Roumanian nation is, or at least the genuine and most interesting part of it, the peasants. No moment seems more appropriate for putting it before the public than this very year, when the Roumanians are celebrating their eighteenth centenary in the Carpathian region, the fortieth anniversary of King Carol I. on the throne of Free Roumania, the thirtieth anniversary of her independence, and the twenty-fifth anniversary of the young kingdom. A national exhibition in Bucharest, opened for the occasion, will help to show the progress made by the nation at large. What would not this progress be, were it the result of a civilisation of eighteen centuries standing! But, out of the eighteen centuries, ten have to be deducted, having been filled by the unrelenting barbaric invasions of the Middle Ages; of the remaining eight hundred, more than seven centuries ought again to be taken out, as quite unprogressive, owing to Turkish suzerainty. Excerpt from Our Social Bees: Or Pictures of Town Country Life, and Other Papers Reader, if you be not entirely "used up," and can still relish a minor excitement, take a stroll through the General Post-office some Saturday evening, just as the clock is upon the strike of six. The scene is much more exciting than half the emeutes which take place on the continent; considerably cheaper, and much more safe. Stand aside amid the treble bank of spectators on the right hand, and watch the general attack upon the letter-takers. A stream of four or five hundred people, who run as Doyle's pencil only can make them run, dash desperately towards the open windows of the receivers. Against this torrent a couple of hundred who have posted, dodge and finally disappear. Wave after wave of people advances and retreats, gorging with billets the capacious swallow of the post. Meanwhile, a still more active and vigorous attack is going on in the direction where newspapers are received. A sashless window-frame, with tremendous gape, is assaulted with showers of papers, which fly faster and thicker than the driven snow. Now and then large sackfuls, direct from the different newsvenders and publishing offices, are bundled in and bolted whole. Excerpt from The Open Air: An Anthology of English Country Life Another form of isolation has been brought by mo tors into country districts. One's circle of friends is no longer the circle of a ten-mile radius. On the contrary, one's circle of friends has small geographical reference. One friend is forty miles in one direction, another twenty-five miles in another, half-a-dozen are in Lon don, one in Hampshire and so on. Thus people living in a place may have no part in that place fundamentally, or in any place. Whereas in the old days whoever lived round about you, unless they were extremely difficult, you fitted into your circle of friendship. The more so cially gifted thus helped out the less, and the whole was leavened. Now, by more peremptory standards, we choose only those With whom we are 'in sympathy' the spontaneous functions of local life consequently de cay and the number of lonely old people must be le gion. Young people must earn their living in cities, so the country that is not within week - encl radius of Lon don is given up to the elderly and retired. Excerpt from Scenes and Tales of Country Life With Recollections of Natural History The reader may perhaps remember a pleasing fable of Pilpay's, in which a King is introduced, accompanied by his Vizir, proceeding on a hunting expedition. After the sport was over, the King was returning to his palace; but by this time the sun was high in the firmament, and the King declared his inability to endure its scorching rays. "If your Majesty pleases" said the Vizir, "I will conduct you to the foot of a neighbouring mountain, where we may enjoy a cool shade and refreshing breezes." The King having assented to the proposition, they shortly found themselves at a delightful spot, overcanopied by the most luxuriant foliage, and surrounded by running brooks and sparkling fountains. Reclining on the smooth grass, the monarch fell into silent contemplation of the works of the great Creator, as exemplified in the inimitable painting of the flowers, and in the many beautiful objects which lay before him.
