A new, interactive approach to storytime, The Whole Book Approach was developed in conjunction with the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art and expert author Megan Dowd Lambert's graduate work in children's literature at Simmons College, offering a practical guide for reshaping storytime and getting kids to think with their eyes. Traditional storytime often offers a passive experience for kids, but the Whole Book approach asks the youngest of readers to ponder all aspects of a picture book and to use their critical thinking skills. Using classic examples, Megan asks kids to think about why the trim size of Ludwig Bemelman's Madeline is so generous, or why the typeset in David Wiesner's Caldecott winner,The Three Pigs, appears to twist around the page, or why books like Chris Van Allsburg's The Polar Express and Eric Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar are printed landscape instead of portrait. The dynamic discussions that result from this shared reading style range from the profound to the hilarious and will inspire adults to make children's responses to text, art, and design an essential part of storytime.

Words About Pictures written by Perry Nodelman and has been published by University of Georgia Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1990-01-01 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

"A pioneering study of a unique narrative form, Words about Pictures examines the special qualities of picture books--books intended to educate or tell stories to young children. Drawing from a number of aesthetic and literary sources, Perry Nodelman explores the ways in which the interplay of the verbal and visual aspects of picture books conveys more narrative information and stimulation than either medium could achieve alone. Moving from "baby" books, alphabet books, and word books to such well-known children's picture books as Nancy Ekholm Burkert's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Gerald McDermott's Arrow to the Sun, Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are, and Chris Van Allsburg's The Garden of Abdul Gasazi, Nodelman reveals how picture-book narrative is affected by the exclusively visual information of picture-book design and illustration as well as by the relationships between pictures and their complementary texts."--pub. desc.

Whether controversial or taken for granted, pictures of children are everywhere - in magazines, newspapers and advertisements, on greetings cards and the Internet. "Picturing Childhood" demonstrates how these familiar images reveal a view of childhood which is constantly changing. With debates over children's rights in the 1970s, child sexual abuse in the 1980s, violent children in the 1990s and precocity and consumerism in the 2000s, the traditional image of childhood innocence survives only as a form of kitsch. Using images from a wide variety of sources, this text considers the popular imagery in relation to news, education, welfare, charity and consumerism and asks what implications does all this have for the ways in which children themselves are treated?

Based on the NAEYC and NAEA standards, this teacher–friendly resource includes lesson ideas, examples of activities, and photographs of children. “The Story in the Picture has the capacity to have a profound impact on how art is viewed by educators by changing the art experience from one of insignificance to one that contributes greatly to the cognitive growth of the child.” —Sharon Shaffer, Executive Director, Smithsonian Early Enrichment Center “Christine Mulcahey’s watchwords are freedom, creativity, and imagination. . . . One can almost feel perspectives opening on her side of the looking glass as children’s voices break through the hush, and we come in touch with the unexpected.” —From the Foreword by Maxine Greene, Teachers College, Columbia University “Early childhood teachers will find this well–written, engaging, and easy–to–read book to be a gift! It makes sense of current research on early childhood and art and speaks to many common insecurities with easy–to–implement suggestions for the classroom.” —Cathy Topal, Smith College “In the tradition of Geraldine Dimondstein and W. Lambert Brittain, Christine Mulcahey shares wise counsel gleaned from conversations with young children about the art they make and the art that they encounter in richly varied preschool programs. —Christine Marmé Thompson, Pennsylvania State University

Picturing The Wolf In Children S Literature written by Debra Mitts-Smith and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Literary Criticism categories.

From the villainous beast of “Little Red Riding Hood” and “The Three Little Pigs,” to the nurturing wolves of Romulus and Remus and Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book, the wolf has long been a part of the landscape of children’s literature. Meanwhile, since the 1960s and the popularization of scientific research on these animals, children’s books have begun to feature more nuanced views. In Picturing the Wolf in Children’s Literature, Mitts-Smith analyzes visual images of the wolf in children’s books published in Western Europe and North America from 1500 to the present. In particular, she considers how wolves are depicted in and across particular works, the values and attitudes that inform these depictions, and how the concept of the wolf has changed over time. What she discovers is that illustrations and photos in works for children impart social, cultural, and scientific information not only about wolves, but also about humans and human behavior. First encountered in childhood, picture books act as a training ground where the young learn both how to decode the “symbolic” wolf across various contexts and how to make sense of “real” wolves. Mitts-Smith studies sources including myths, legends, fables, folk and fairy tales, fractured tales, fictional stories, and nonfiction, highlighting those instances in which images play a major role, including illustrated anthologies, chapbooks, picture books, and informational books. This book will be of interest to children’s literature scholars, as well as those interested in the figure of the wolf and how it has been informed over time.
