In the Guide to the Software Engineering Body of Knowledge (SWEBOK(R) Guide), the IEEE Computer Society establishes a baseline for the body of knowledge for the field of software engineering, and the work supports the Society's responsibility to promote the advancement of both theory and practice in this field. It should be noted that the Guide does not purport to define the body of knowledge but rather to serve as a compendium and guide to the knowledge that has been developing and evolving over the past four decades. Now in Version 3.0, the Guide's 15 knowledge areas summarize generally accepted topics and list references for detailed information. The editors for Version 3.0 of the SWEBOK(R) Guide are Pierre Bourque (Ecole de technologie superieure (ETS), Universite du Quebec) and Richard E. (Dick) Fairley (Software and Systems Engineering Associates (S2EA)).

Did you know that Canada’s Criminal Code still has provisions outlawing the practice of witchcraft and "crafty sciences"? Did you know that blasphemy is a crime in Canada? And did you know that putting a picture of a red poppy on your website could get you in trouble with the Royal Canadian Legion? Lawyer and author Bob Tarantino takes readers on an entertaining and informative romp through Canada’s legal labyrinths in a book that spotlights the country’s past and present strange-but-true laws and legal history. He examines odd statutes and arcane jurisprudence across the spectrum of Canadian endeavours, from war and religion to sex and culture to politics and business. Frequently, he demonstrates the parallels between yesterday’s prohibitions and today’s trends such as the edict against duelling and the legalities of twenty-first-century hockey slugfests, or the confiscation of so-called crime comics in the 1950s and the controversy surrounding violence in contemporary video games.

Featuring essays from Dimitri Roussopoulos, Shawn Katz, Bill Freeman, Patrick J. Smith and Ann Marie Utratel In the early 2000s human society entered a new urban epoch in which the majority of human beings live in cities. The Rise of Cities: Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver and Other Cities offers an intriguing response to this milestone. Taking the 150th anniversary of Canada in 2017 as an opportunity to respond to essential urban questions through the lens of Canada's three major cities, the contributors present a stimulating analysis of how cities coalesce, develop, and thrive, and how they can be remade to better serve the lifeblood of all cities - their citizens. Also featuring essays on urban activism in Barcelona and Madrid, The Rise of Cities provides a rigorous and accessible introduction to the key questions of 21st century urbanism. 214 Pages; Includes Bibliography Paperback ISBN; 978-1-55164-334-2 Hardback ISBN: 978-1-55164-335-9 eBook (PDF) ISBN: 978-1-55164-615-2 Table of Contents From the Rise of Cities to the Right to the City - By Way of an Introduction -Dimitri Roussopoulos Montreal -Shawn Katz and Dimitri Roussopoulos Toronto -Bill Freeman Vancouver -Patrick J. Merger Delusion written by Peter F. Trent and has been published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-10-01 with Political Science categories.

Powerless under the country's constitution, Canadian municipal governments often find themselves in conflict with their provincial masters. In 2002, the Province of Quebec forcibly merged all cities on the Island of Montreal into a single municipality - a decision that was partially reversed in 2006. The first book-length study of the series of mergers imposed by the Parti Québécois government, The Merger Delusion is a sharp and insightful critique by a key player in anti-merger politics. Peter Trent, mayor of the City of Westmount, Quebec, foresaw the numerous financial and institutional problems posed by amalgamating municipalities into megacities. Here, he presents a stirring and detailed account of the battle he led against the provincial government, the City of Montreal, the Board of Trade, and many of his former colleagues. Describing how he took the struggle all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada, Trent demonstrates the ways in which de-mergers resonated with voters and eventually helped the Quebec Liberal Party win the 2003 provincial election. As the cost and pitfalls of forced mergers become clearer in hindsight, The Merger Delusion recounts a compelling case study with broad implications for cities across the globe.

Policies forged by all levels of government affect the lives of urban residents. Contributors to this volume explore how intergovernmental relations shape urban policies and how various social forces are involved in - or excluded from - the policy process. Focusing on diverse policy fields including emergency planning, image-building, immigrant settlement, infrastructure, federal property, and urban Aboriginal policy, Sites of Governance presents detailed studies of the largest city in each of Canada's provinces. Drawing on extensive documentary research and hundreds of interviews, contributors offer rich, nuanced analyses and a wealth of policy cases, ranging from preparation for the Vancouver 2010 Olympics to the development of innovative immigrant settlement programming in Winnipeg. Dominant themes include the importance of resources and formal jurisdiction in multilevel policy making, and the struggle for influence between business interests and other social forces. Essential reading for anyone concerned with the quality of urban life in Canada, Sites of Governance offers important insights about how multilevel governance works in Canadian cities. Contributors include Laurence Bherer (Université de Montréal), David Bulger (University of Prince Edward Island), Christopher Dunn (Memorial University), Robert Finbow (Dalhousie University), Joseph Garcea (University of Saskatchewan), Pierre Hamel (Université de Montréal), Martin Horak (University of Western Ontario), Thomas Hutton (University of British Columbia), Christopher Leo (University of Winnipeg), Greg Marquis (University of New Brunswick , Saint John), Byron Miller (University of Calgary), Cecily Pantin (Memorial University), Alan Smart (University of Calgary), Donald Story (University of Saskatchewan), and Robert Young (University of Western Ontario).
