This collection revisits A Theory of Literary Production (1966) to show how Pierre Macherey’s remarkable—and still provocative—early work can contribute to contemporary discussions about the act of reading and the politics of formal analysis. Across a series of historically and philosophically contextualized readings, the volume’s contributors interrogate Macherey’s work on a range of pressing issues, including the development of a theory of reading and criticism, the relationship between the spoken and the unspoken, the labor of poetic determination and of literature’s resistance to ideological context, the literary relevance of a Spinozist materialism, the process of racial subjectification and the ontology of Blackness, and a theorization of the textual surface. Pierre Macherey and the Case of Literary Production also includes three new texts by Macherey, presented here in English for the first time: his postface to the revised French edition of A Theory of Literary Production; “Reading Althusser,” in which Macherey analyzes the concept of symptomatic reading; and a comprehensive interview in which Macherey reflects on the historical conditions of his early work, the long arc of his career at the intersection of philosophy and literature, and the ongoing importance of Louis Althusser’s thought. Recent translations of Macherey’s work into English have introduced new readers to the critic’s enduring power and originality. Timely in its questions and teeming with fresh insights, Pierre Macherey and the Case of Literary Production demonstrates the depths to which his work resonates, now more than ever.

Explains to structural engineers some of the basic equations for analyzing and designing buildings that were devised at the end of the 19th century but were so unmanageably complex to solve that they were displaced by approximation techniques until the recent advent of electronic computer. Heyman (engineering, U. of Cambridge) warns that some of the equations turn out not to fit reality as close as future occupants of buildings might prefer, and explains how to use them and in what context. Womb Fantasies written by Caroline Rupprecht and has been published by Northwestern University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-08-31 with Literary Criticism categories.

Womb Fantasies examines the womb, an invisible and mysterious space invested with allegorical significance, as a metaphorical space in postwar cinematic and literary texts grappling with the trauma of post-holocaust, postmodern existence. In addition, it examines the representation of visible spaces in the texts in terms of their attribution with womb-like qualities. The framing of the study historically within the postwar era begins with a discussion of Eero Saarinen’s Womb Chair in the context of the Cold War’s need for safety in light of the threat of nuclear destruction, and ranges over films such as Marguerite Duras’ and Alan Resnais’ film Hiroshima mon amour and Duras’ novel The Vice-Consul, exploring the ways that such cultural texts fantasize the womb as a response to trauma, defined as the compulsive need to return to the site of loss, a place envisioned as both a secure space and a prison. The womb fantasy is linked to the desire to recreate an identity that is new and original but ahistorical.

Dear Friend written by Eric Torgersen and has been published by Northwestern University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000-04 with Art categories.

"In 1908, Rainer Maria Rilke wrote his "Requiem for a Friend" in memory of Paula Modersohn-Becker, the German painter who had had a profound effect on him, both personally and artistically, and who had died a year earlier. Modersohn-Becker, despite being one of the great modern painters, is today remembered primarily as she is portrayed in that poem. In Dear Friend, Eric Torgersen looks at the relationship of these two great artists whose vexed seven-year friendship was extraordinarily productive for both, and offers an introduction to the life and work of Modersohn-Becker, a gifted and determined woman whose work stands comparison with that of any painter of her day." "Included in the book are sixteen illustrations as well as new translations by Torgersen of Rilke's "Requiem for a Friend" and of the love poems Rilke wrote for Becker shortly after they met. Torgersen discusses Modersohn-Becker's vital paintings, including her unfinished portrait of Rilke. He quotes extensively from the letters and journals of both figures, translating many of Rilke's into English for the first time. Finally, Torgersen addresses the unanswered question of whether the two were ever lovers, and offers new insights into Rilke's writing of "Requiem for a Friend.""--Jacket.

Eugene Jolas written by Eugène Jolas and has been published by Northwestern University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with Literary Criticism categories.

Dividing his youth between the United States and the bilingual Alsace-Lorraine, Eugene Jolas (1894-1952) flourished in three languages. As an editor and poet, he came to know the major writers and artists of his time and enjoyed a pivotal position between the Anglo-American and Continental avant-garde. His editorship of transition, the leading avant-garde journal of Paris in the twenties and early thirties, provided a major impetus to writers from James Joyce (whose Finnegans Wake was serialized in transition) to Gertrude Stein, and Samuel Beckett, with first translations of André Breton, and Franz Kafka, among others. Jolas's critical work, collected in this volume, includes introductions to anthologies, manifestoes like the famous Vertical, essays, some published here for the first time, on writers as various as Novalis, Trakl, the major Surrealists, Heidegger, and other philosophers. An acute observer of the literary scene as well as of the roiling politics of the time, Jolas emerges here in his role at the very center of avant-garde activity between the wars. Accordingly, this book is of signal importance to anyone with an interest in modernism, avant-garde, multilingualism, and the culture of Western Europe in the first half of the twentieth century.
