Writing with clarity and precision, within Pierre Viret the Theologian author Jean-Marc Berthoud examines the life and theology of this forgotten giant of the Reformation. Addressing both Viret's writing and its theological and philosophical implications, he provides poignantly relevant applications to the contemporary moral battles of our own day. Within these pages Berthoud analyzes Pierre Viret's thought on how man attains a true knowledge of God as well as how the world and history are to be viewed through this knowledge. Drawing on a work written by Douglas Kelly, Berthoud then discusses Viret's teaching on the image of God in man. He also examines the Swiss Reformer's understanding of the jurisdictional bounds between Church and State, the definition and use of natural law, and the application of God's Law to society. He also insightfully compares Pierre Viret and his fellow-Reformer John Calvin, noting the similarities and differences between the two men and highlighting the distinct yet complementary aspects of their thought and writings. Author Jean-Marc Berthoud was born in 1939 in South Africa and currently resides in Lausanne, Switzerland. He is a Christian apologist, historian, philosopher, theologian, and author of many books and numerous articles. He studied history at Johannesburg, the Sorbonne, and the University of London. Jean-Marc is married to Rose-Marie, and they are the parents of five children and grandparents of eleven grandchildren.

"If John Calvin was the consummate dogmatician and the prince of exegetes, Pierre Viret must be considered the finest ethicist and the most acute apologist of the sixteenth century. His strength was a domain often neglected because of its awkwardness: the application of the Word of God to all domains of life. His Exposition of the Ten Commandments is unquestionably the best commentary on the Decalogue that the Christian Church has ever known. Not only do we find here a detailed application of God's word to the practical problems of Christian living in every aspect of personal and social life, but this is done with an admirable sense of theological balance and of the delicate relation of dogmatics to ethics, together with the constant, implicit purpose of favoring the preaching of the gospel, of extending God's kingdom, and of bringing all honor and praise to the Lord Jesus Christ. It is high time that we finally begin to grasp the importance of this remarkable thinker, that we make his words available in English, and that we return to his vision of the application of the complete Word of God to all aspects of human life. Without such a return to Biblical reality, we can have no hope for the revival of the Church and for the restoration of its reformational influence over the entirety of culture and society." - Jean-Marc Berthoud, author and theologian Volume One (of the 2-volume set) is an English translation of the first part of Pierre Viret's commentary on the Ten Commandments published originally in French in 1554 under the title Exposition familiere sur les Dix Commandemens de la Loy, faite en forme de Dialogues. It later appeared in a slightly enlarged edition under the title Instruction Chrestienne en la doctrine de la loy et de l'Evangile, printed in Geneva by Jean Rivery (1564). The text of this book has been translated from the 1564 edition. With the intention of presenting his readers with an easily-understood, down-to-earth exposition of the Ten Commandments, Viret wrote his commentary as a conversation between two fictitious characters, Daniel and Timothy. Within the work Daniel (representative perhaps of the Old Testament prophets) draws out the truths of Scripture for his disciple Timothy (representative of a young believer in the Gospel era). Viret emphasizes the practical applicability of the Law of God, painstakingly applying the truths of each commandment to the everyday lives of his readers and creating a sound, biblical exposition as applicable today as it was the day it was first penned.

Pierre Viret (1511-1571), a Reformer from French Switzerland, was a close friend and associate of William Farel and John Calvin. Entering the ministry at only twenty years of age, Viret assisted William Farel in bringing the reformation to Geneva, after which he pastored churches at Lausanne and Geneva and ministered in various cities in France. Viret was a prolific writer. The majority of his numerous works were penned not for theologians, but rather for the members of his and other congregations. Written in French (instead of the typical Latin), Viret's books offered the common workingman an engaging, easy-to-read instruction in the teaching of the Reformed Faith. No Other God is an English translation of the first section of Viret's commentary on the Ten Commandments, published originally in Geneva in 1564. Within this volume Viret exposits the first commandment as well as the preface to the Law. In order to render his writing as understandable as possible, Viret wrote his commentary as a conversation between two fictitious characters, Daniel and Timothy. Throughout the course of their conversation in this volume, Timothy and Daniel discuss God's presence among His creatures (and particularly among His chosen people), His names and titles, and why He chose to reveal Himself in the way that He did. They also discuss how the Law given to Israel is applicable to Christians today, and the difference between human and divine laws. The question of how God's Law is to be fulfilled or transgressed is considered, as well as the practical implications of the fact that God looks at a man's heart and affections as well as at his words and external works. At Timothy's request, Daniel examines the nature of God and how the true God is to be distinguished from false gods. Before the conversation ends, the pair also addresses the honor which God requires of us in His Law, the honor we owe to men, the nature of true faith and trust, the fruits of true faith, and much more.Joining Pierre Viret is fellow-Reformer John Calvin with a sermon on the first commandment of the Law.

In Calvin's Company of Pastors, Scott Manetsch examines the pastoral theology and practical ministry activities of Geneva's reformed ministers from the time of Calvin's arrival in Geneva until the beginning of the seventeenth century. During these seven decades, more than 130 men were enrolled in Geneva's Venerable Company of Pastors (as it was called), including notable reformed leaders such as Pierre Viret, Theodore Beza, Simon Goulart, Lambert Daneau, and Jean Diodati. Aside from these better-known epigones, Geneva's pastors from this period remain hidden from view, cloaked in Calvin's long shadow, even though they played a strategic role in preserving and reshaping Calvin's pastoral legacy. Making extensive use of archival materials, published sermons, catechisms, prayer books, personal correspondence, and theological writings, Manetsch offers an engaging and vivid portrait of pastoral life in sixteenth- and early seventeenth-century Geneva, exploring the manner in which Geneva's ministers conceived of their pastoral office and performed their daily responsibilities of preaching, public worship, moral discipline, catechesis, administering the sacraments, and pastoral care. Manetsch demonstrates that Calvin and his colleagues were much more than ivory tower theologians or "quasi-agents of the state," concerned primarily with dispensing theological information to their congregations or enforcing magisterial authority. Rather, they saw themselves as spiritual shepherds of Christ's Church, and this self-understanding shaped to a significant degree their daily work as pastors and preachers.
