Excerpt from Exercises on the Three Hundredth Anniversary of the Landing of the Pilgrims: Held at Plymouth, Massachusetts Tuesday, December 21, 1920 Spirit of light, and ever more Light, God of our fathers' faith! Humble us to thank thee meekly for them, the brave, the kind, the true, who having lived yet live. How constant art thou unto sons who fear thee, fearing naught beside; who revere thee, and their need is met! We praise thee for the work they wrought, who were poor in all the goods of earth, rich in the knowledge of thy Law; who in pain set up the first rude shelter here who builded here an House of Life so vast that under its wide roof is room for a world of men. While hearts beat high with the emotions of this hour, this day, let us not cease to think how it was thy Hand led them forth, three hundred years ago, and held them safe, to their desired haven. Endue us with some part of their stern and patient wisdom of duty, their Pilgrim quietness of soul. O strong and loving Father of mankind! To our dear country bring in again the good and godly order, as of old; that the days of this free people may be long in the land the Lord their God gave to our fathers, for we know, thy Promise doth not fail for evermore. Amen. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Excerpt from The Pilgrim Spirit: A Pageant in Celebration of the Tercentenary of the Landing of the Pilgrims at Plymouth, Massachusetts, December 21, 1620 As the Pageant begins, there is a fanfare of trumpets passing to a hymn-like chord. From the canopied rock a rich, powerful voice speaks. The speaker is unseen. I, the rock of Plymouth, speak to you, Americans. Here I rested in the ooze From the ages primordial. Men came and went: Norsemen, Seamen of England, voyagers of France, Dutch adventurers; Over and round me The Indians worked, played, lived. I was a rock of millions along the shore, Waiting, - for what? Came pestilence, sweeping the Indians from the land. Not one remaining here at Patuxet, Accomack. Cap St. Louis, New England, as the Indian, the French, Prince Charles of England, called this spot. Around me the cleared fields waiting, The bay swarming with fish, The woods full of game, all waiting. I, too, waiting, for what? In England, growing, the spirit of man, Freed by his Bible, read in his home, Studied with passion. Out of the Church of England - a Puritan. In 1916, John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) met Thomas Eugene McKeller (1890-1962) a young African American elevator attendant at Boston's Hotel Vendome. McKeller became the principal model for Sargent's murals in the new wing of the Boston's Museum of Fine Arts, among the painter's most ambitious works. Sargent's nude studies and sketches from this project attest to a close collaboration between the two men that unfolded over nearly ten years. Featuring drawings given by Sargent to Isabella Stewart Gardner and published in full for the first time, a portrait of McKeller, and archival materials reconstructing his life and relationship with Sargent, this book opens new avenues into artist-model relationships and transforms our understanding of Sargent's iconic American paintings. Essays offer the first biography of Thomas McKeller and a window into African America life in early 20th century Roxbury. They address the artist's sexuality, his models, and consider questions of race and gender.

The Book Of Barely Imagined Beings written by Caspar Henderson and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-04-10 with Nature categories.

From medieval bestiaries to Borges’s Book of Imaginary Beings, we’ve long been enchanted by extraordinary animals, be they terrifying three-headed dogs or asps impervious to a snake charmer’s song. But bestiaries are more than just zany zoology—they are artful attempts to convey broader beliefs about human beings and the natural order. Today, we no longer fear sea monsters or banshees. But from the infamous honey badger to the giant squid, animals continue to captivate us with the things they can do and the things they cannot, what we know about them and what we don’t. With The Book of Barely Imagined Beings, Caspar Henderson offers readers a fascinating, beautifully produced modern-day menagerie. But whereas medieval bestiaries were often based on folklore and myth, the creatures that abound in Henderson’s book—from the axolotl to the zebrafish—are, with one exception, very much with us, albeit sometimes in depleted numbers. The Book of Barely Imagined Beings transports readers to a world of real creatures that seem as if they should be made up—that are somehow more astonishing than anything we might have imagined. The yeti crab, for example, uses its furry claws to farm the bacteria on which it feeds. The waterbear, meanwhile, is among nature’s “extreme survivors,” able to withstand a week unprotected in outer space. These and other strange and surprising species invite readers to reflect on what we value—or fail to value—and what we might change. A powerful combination of wit, cutting-edge natural history, and philosophical meditation, The Book of Barely Imagined Beings is an infectious and inspiring celebration of the sheer ingenuity and variety of life in a time of crisis and change.
