Protestants who fled England during the reign of Mary Tudor settled in a number of cities on the Continent. Those who went to Geneva at the invitation of John Calvin have become known as the most radical voices for reform of the Church of England during the Elizabethan Settlement. Many scholars have called them «puritans.» Pilgrimage to Puritanism is a comprehensive study of these English Protestant refugees: who they were, what they published while in Geneva and later during Elizabeth's reign, the nature of the refugee church they established under Calvin's tutelage, and the theological and political thought that became pivotal in sixteenth-century English Puritanism.

For at least the first two centuries following its publication, John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress was among the most formative and beloved books England contributed to the Western tradition, second only to the English Bible in popularity and influence. In this important new study, Kathleen Swaim recognizes Bunyan as a major Puritan cultural figure and Pilgrim's Progress as a multilayered locus of cultural, historical, and theological, as well as literary, systems. Her work maps shifts of cultural and theological emphasis as Christian's focus on the Word and Protestant martyrdom in Part I (1678) gives way to Christiana's characteristic emphasis on good works and the material reality of the Church in the world in Part II (1684). Swaim's study locates Part I of Pilgrim's Progress within the discourses of allegory, myth, the biblical and sermonic word, and the conversion narrative tradition. It locates Part II within modern social constructions, particularly those of gender, and within contemporary church practices and emerging new modes of representation. It draws upon Bunyan's numerous other works to explicate Pilgrim's Progress as a mirror of evolving late seventeenth-century Puritan culture.

Puritans did not find a life free from tyranny in the New World—they created it there. Massachusetts emerged a republic as they hammered out a vision of popular participation and limited government in church and state, spurred by Plymouth Pilgrims. Godly Republicanism underscores how pathbreaking yet rooted in puritanism’s history the project was. Michael Winship takes us first to England, where he uncovers the roots of the puritans’ republican ideals in the aspirations and struggles of Elizabethan Presbyterians. Faced with the twin tyrannies of Catholicism and the crown, Presbyterians turned to the ancient New Testament churches for guidance. What they discovered there—whether it existed or not—was a republican structure that suggested better models for governing than monarchy. The puritans took their ideals to Massachusetts, but they did not forge their godly republic alone. In this book, for the first time, the separatists’ contentious, creative interaction with the puritans is given its due. Winship looks at the emergence of separatism and puritanism from shared origins in Elizabethan England, considers their split, and narrates the story of their reunion in Massachusetts. Out of the encounter between the separatist Plymouth Pilgrims and the puritans of Massachusetts Bay arose Massachusetts Congregationalism.
