The Paradox of Pilgrimage: Cultural Representations of the Camino de Santiago in Contemporary Spain discusses some representative examples within the cultural production about the pilgrimage known as the Camino de Santiago (the Way of St. James) in Spain during the past four decades. I pay special attention to the emergence of Spanish fictional literature about the Camino in the new millennium and analyze it in correlation with other contemporary Spanish cultural representations. The attention to representation responds to the increased production of cultural material (architecture, objects, texts, images, videos) on the Spanish pilgrimage within Spain, but also internationally. My method is inductive and interdisciplinary. I developed an interpretive model based on selected cultural representations of the Camino, which I take as an analytical tool to discuss literature. The theory that informs this dissertation is fundamentally postmodern, and combines cultural studies of space, literary analysis, tourism and pilgrimage studies. I argue that today's pilgrimage derives claims to authenticity from allusions to its medieval origins while simultaneously accommodating a contemporary sensibility. Therefore, the fictional world of Spanish contemporary novels presents a set of defined textual responses to the tensions and paradoxes between tradition and the modern experience of the Camino that can also be observed in other cultural representations. This dissertation underscores the significance of literature and stories in general in the functioning of the Camino, from the foundational myths of origin that tell how the bones of the Apostle St. James were found, to more recent stories such as the ones analyzed in this dissertation. This emphasis points at the fact that pilgrims walk towards a story or stories rather than towards the certainty that the bones in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela are those of the Apostle.

This is a book about pilgrimage, peace building, and being here in the future. Sacred journeys are by far the most peaceful mass rituals that humankind has yet devised for itself. Can these journeys contribute to ending the poverty, racial inequality, and intractable conflict so common on the world stage today? In a radical rethinking of the nature and definition of pilgrimage, anthropologist Ian McIntosh describes this ancient practice as a handy tool in the peace-builder’s toolkit. In a range of case studies, he shows how pilgrimage provides geographically and historically separated peoples with a strong sense of their membership in a global community facing global challenges. The text includes autobiographical accounts of the author’s experience of pilgrimage in Aboriginal Australia, Communist China, multi-faith Sri Lanka, and the embattled Gaza Strip. There are also academic papers that advance the proposed link between pilgrimage and peace building from Canada, India, Kenya, Pakistan, Russia and elsewhere. The common thread in all these sacred journeys is a vision of peace, justice and sustainability. We are all in this together. For humankind to survive on this planet, pilgrimage, in all its rich diversity, will undoubtedly play a critical role.

Julia Bolton Holloway's The Pilgrim and the Book: A Study of Dante, Langland and Chaucer investigates major fourteenth-century texts, the Commedia, Piers Plowman and The Canterbury Tales, in the light of the medieval theory and practice of pilgrimage, especially concentrating on Emmaus and Exodus paradigms. Holloway's analysis draws extensively on iconography, musicology, typology and anthropology. The concluding chapter explains why each poet places himself within his poem - in his own image - as a pilgrim.

This collection of essays presents the very latest research on the peace-building dimension of sacred and secular journeys at individual, societal, regional and global levels. Not since the 1980s has there been any concerted effort to explore the potential of such journeys in helping to bridge the divide that separates people of diverse ethnicities, religions and cultures. This volume gathers together empirical studies, regional analyses, and personal reflections from four continents and twelve countries, including Sri Lanka, Syria, Ethiopia, and Indonesia, which highlight the potential of religious tourism and pilgrimage for promoting interfaith solidarity, natural dialogue, and inner peace. It will be of interest to religion, tourism and peace scholars, as well as to political scientists and anthropologists.
