This Aerospace Standard (AS) assures that new transport type aircraft will provide adequate visibility from the flight deck. Background - Prior to updating this AS, the committee re-evaluated flight deck visibility angles existing in transport aircraft produced up to 1975. In addition, studies and evaluations made by various airframe manufacturers were reviewed. As a result, this standard has been modified to provide more visibility in the critical areas that are most effective for collision avoidance. The "three second rule" for landing has been retained unmodified even though some late model aircraft do not completely meet the rule. The SAE Committee S-7, whose members represent a good cross section of operations personnel of the airline operators and manufacturers feel that it is still a desirable goal and no technical studies have been presented to show that a better standard would be more desirable.

Past flight deck design practices used within the U.S. commercial transport aircraft industry have been highly successful in producing safe and efficient aircraft. However, recent advances in automation have changed the way pilots operate aircraft, and these changes make it necessary to reconsider overall flight deck design. The High Speed Civil Transport (HSCT) mission will likely add new information requirements, such as those for sonic boom management and supersonic/subsonic speed management. Consequently, whether one is concerned with the design of the HSCT, or a next generation subsonic aircraft that will include technological leaps in automated systems, basic issues in human usability of complex systems will be magnified. These concerns must be addressed, in part, with an explicit, written design philosophy focusing on human performance and systems operability in the context of the overall flight crew/flight deck system (i.e., a crew-centered philosophy). This document provides such a philosophy, expressed as a set of guiding design principles, and accompanied by information that will help focus attention on flight crew issues earlier and iteratively within the design process. This document is part 1 of a two-part set. Palmer, Michael T. and Rogers, William H. and Press, Hayes N. and Latorella, Kara A. and Abbott, Terence S. Langley Research Center...

Aircraft Design Projects written by Lloyd R. Jenkinson and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-04-28 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Written with students of aerospace or aeronautical engineering firmly in mind, this is a practical and wide-ranging book that draws together the various theoretical elements of aircraft design - structures, aerodynamics, propulsion, control and others - and guides the reader in applying them in practice. Based on a range of detailed real-life aircraft design projects, including military training, commercial and concept aircraft, the experienced UK and US based authors present engineering students with an essential toolkit and reference to support their own project work. All aircraft projects are unique and it is impossible to provide a template for the work involved in the design process. However, with the knowledge of the steps in the initial design process and of previous experience from similar projects, students will be freer to concentrate on the innovative and analytical aspects of their course project. The authors bring a unique combination of perspectives and experience to this text. It reflects both British and American academic practices in teaching aircraft design. Lloyd Jenkinson has taught aircraft design at both Loughborough and Southampton universities in the UK and Jim Marchman has taught both aircraft and spacecraft design at Virginia Tech in the US. * Demonstrates how basic aircraft design processes can be successfully applied in reality* Case studies allow both student and instructor to examine particular design challenges * Covers commercial and successful student design projects, and includes over 200 high quality illustrations
