Many excellent historical works have traced the development of our province and laid before us the achieve ments of our public men. In vain may we turn over volume after volume in our search for information concerning the evolution of the homestead, and the customs and peculiarities of the commoii folk of long ago. For the most part the sources of my infor mation have been original documents and interviews with old men and women, many of whom have since passed away. Even from such sources it is an easy matter to fall into error; but I have discarded what I feared was not trustworthy, and believe that I can confidently ask the reader to accept the general statements of facts as thorough ly reliable. A book of pioneer life in Upper Canada, arranged in the form of a story. The author spent five-sevenths of his life among the pioneer settlers of Western Canada. The incidents in the story are taken from the active life of the pioneers of Western Ontario, among whom the author grew up. A keen observer, the reverend author has been able to produce a faithful record of the hardships, trials and successes of the hardy pioneers of the Niagara district, and all that magnificent country lying between the Niagara River and Lake Huron and Georgia Bay. It is needless to say, therefore, that the book possesses much historic value as a picture of Canadian life in the early days of this western peninsula. The book is one which will be read with deep interest by those of the old pioneers who remain, and ought to become one of the household treasures of the descendants of those pioneers for many generations.

I left Toronto on the first of September, arriving next day at my destination. My first impressions of the country were not at all encouraging. All the good lots in the township in which I intended to locate appeared to have been already taken, or they were veteran claims, and as such not open for settlement. The lots which I examined were not at all like what I had been led to expect. The small clearings of the settlers full of stumps, their rough log cabins and the thickness of the timber on the ground brought home to me in a very forcible manner the fact that I must not expect any rosy pathway to the realization of my dreams of a good farm in this country.A young man who was cutting wood in front of his shack was anxious to talk. He had been about two years in the country. His faith was strong; so was his sense of hospitality. Would I stay with him a few days while I looked around? I would be delighted. We sat and talked till late in the evening. I learned much from him about the country. He imbued me with some of his faith in its future, and he assured me that success lay before every man who was ready and willing to work; who was not easily discouraged and had a reasonable amount of courage and determination.
