Excerpt from Some Social and Political Pioneers of the Nineteenth Century The following chapters, with the exception of the one on William Morris, originally appeared in the Co-operative News. They are now reprinted in a permanent form in the hope that they will be of service to those who are interested in social questions, and especially to those who wish to make themselves acquainted with some of the most important social and industrial movements of the nineteenth century. An attempt has been made to give not merely a series of short, detached biographies, but to connect, with each person and movement dealt with, a sort of historico-biographical narrative, showing the development of social and political ideas during the course of the century. The reader will thus be enabled to estimate, to some extent, the vast change in thought and outlook which has taken place during the past eighty years. I have to thank my brother Owen for kindly undertaking the tedious task of correcting the proof-sheets of this book. Parliamentary Pioneers : Labour Women MPs 1918-1945 is a compelling account of the trailblazers who laid the foundations for women having an influential voice in the House of Commons. Written by MEP and authoritative spokesperson on women's rights and gender equality Mary Honeyball, the book tells the story of the issues these first MPs championed, the challenges they faced and the lives they led. This doughty group of women, tough and individualistic as they all were, maintained their independence both in their politics and in their personal lives. The election of Labour women to the House o.

This major new literary study offers a fresh view of the significance of the famous group of fourteenth-century poems, 'Pearl', 'Cleanness', 'Patience' and 'Sir Gawain and the Green Knight'. It is a comprehensive study which puts the poems themselves firmly at its centre, though it is always alert to relevant aspects of their literary and cultural context. John Anderson builds his discussions of the poems' ideas on an examination of the anonymous poet's superb Shakespeare-like language. He finds that the great fourteenth-century struggle, between religious and secular forces for control of men's minds, underlies all the poems. This title is the first in the new Manchester Medieval Literature series, which makes readability a priority. Accordingly, despite its wide range of reference and the radicalism of some of its leading ideas, this book is written in a jargon-free style designed to appeal to specialist, non-specialist and student readers alike.

Pioneers Or Pawns written by Marina de Regt and has been published by Syracuse University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-10-22 with Business & Economics categories.

Marina de Regt provides an invaluable analysis of gender, health care training, and globalization, demonstrating women’s positive impact on the complex workings of Yemeni health institutions. Using the Hodeida Urban Primary Health Care Project as a case study, the author looks at how development policies of the state interconnect with agendas of global donor organizations and the employment of women in the face of social disapproval and barriers to advancement. Her highly accessible writing blends keen observations steeped in personal experience, with a thorough grounding in theoretical literature. Through interviews and the experience of working directly with the women she writes about, De Regt gives voice to her subjects and offers an extraordinary portrait of the lives, emotions, and work of women dedicated to healing in a time of great political change. This vitally important work challenges not only preconceived notions of the way in which health care is distributed in the Middle East, but also questions the way women participate, facilitate, and resist the political change around them.
