2012 Poetry Midwest Booksellers Choice Award winner "[Todd Boss] can make any rhyme feel like a concealed weapon." —Sherman Alexie With poems about loss, home, marriage, and the inner music of our lives, Pitch is a series of variations on an overturned piano. By turns bright and dark like the keys on a keyboard, these poems demonstrate the range of one of contemporary poetry’s most musical poets, a master of internal rhyme. from “Overtures on an Overturned Piano” . . . our hi-beams played across the gleaming bed of snowdrifted bramble where it lay, moaning chaotically . . .

Praised in recent years as a “calculating, improvisatory, essential poet” by Daisy Fried in the New York Times, Charles Bernstein is a leading voice in American literary theory. Pitch of Poetry is his irreverent guide to modernist and contemporary poetics. Subjects range across Holocaust representation, Occupy Wall Street, and the figurative nature of abstract art. Detailed overviews of formally inventive work include essays on—or “pitches” for—a set of key poets, from Gertrude Stein and Robert Creeley to John Ashbery, Barbara Guest, Larry Eigner, and Leslie Scalapino. Bernstein also reveals the formative ideas behind the magazine L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E. The final section, published here for the first time, is a sweeping work on the poetics of stigma, perversity, and disability that is rooted in the thinking of Edgar Allan Poe, Emily Dickinson, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and William Blake. Pitch of Poetry makes an exhilarating case for what Bernstein calls echopoetics: a poetry of call and response, reason and imagination, disfiguration and refiguration.

Pitch Particle of Poetry stems from deep within me. I find it therapeutic to weave poetry like one may find solace in their own diary. For me, itA[a¬a[s sharing with an open heart, and listening to a kind soul that makes the difference in somber days. IA[a¬a[ve traveled quite a bit in my time, and made lots of memories. Some I wish to erase, others, I cherish. When youA[a¬a[ve lived in the valley, one gains personal experience there, and many dangling threads end up beautifully stitched. This book takes readers on isolated journeys, where snippets purge on pale paper. ItA[a¬a[s in the deafening silence of shadowy nights, my pen seeps its creative tears.

"Pitch and Revelation is the first book-length study of the poetry, prose, and dramatic literature of the African American poet Jay Wright (1934-). The authors premise their reading on joy as a foundational philosophical concept. In this, they follow Spinoza, who understood joy as that affect necessary for the construction of an intellectual love of God, leading into the infinite univocity of everything. Similarly, with Wright, joy leads to a visceral sense of what the authors call the great weave of the world. This weave is akin to the notion of entanglement made popular by physicists and contemporary scholars of Science Studies, such as Karen Barad, which speaks of the always ongoing, mutually constitutive connections of all matter and intellectual processes. By exhibiting and detailing the joy of reading Wright, Pitch and Revelation intends to help others chart their own paths into the intellectual, musical, and rhythmical territories of Wright's world so as to more fully experience joy in the world generally. Although the exhibitions of meaning making presented are instructive, they do not follow the "do as I do" or "do as I say" model of instructional texts. Instead, they invite the reader to "do along with us" as the authors make meaning from selections across Wright's erudite, dense, rhythmically fascinating, endlessly lyrical, highly structured, and seemingly hermetic body of work."--publisher's website.

How does it feel to love, play, and watch baseball as a kid and as an adult? After a Foreword by Peter Magowan, ex-President of the SF Giants, 50 poems and 21 professional illustrations depict the players and the plays; the challenges of each position; the ups and downs of hitting and fielding; the role of support staff like umpires and coaches; and baseball's fabled history. Poetry can be fun--especially these vividly imagined poems with straightforward language that tell spell-binding stories about baseball. "In his baseball poems Dan Liberthson turns the diamond this way and that to reveal the many facets of the game and of our varied relationships to it. He does so with sharp images and wit."--Bill McGill, ex-Editor, Spitball: The Literary Baseball Magazine "I could not put this book down. The insight is incredible! I literally could feel, see, smell, and be in each poem. Dan Liberthson has poetically found the essence of our great game. I had a grin on my face reading each and every poem."--Brian Doyle, New York Yankees and Oakland Athletics infielder (1978-81) and hero of the 1978 World Series (batted .437 for the Yankees)" "Anyone who knows and loves baseball will enjoy this remarkable collection of poems."--Peter A. Magowan, ex-President, SF Giants "Liberthson does for baseball what Robert Frost did for New England. Though I'm not a baseball fan, this book distills the game's mystique so powerfully that I long for summer and the ballpark."--Nancy Etchemendy, Award-Winning Author and Poet "I have reviewed your book and, quite frankly, it is a joy to read. You certainly capture the passion of the sport and the sociological influence on many millions of people over the past 130 years."--Allan H. (Bud) Selig, ex-Commissioner of Baseball

In baseball, as in much poetry, beauty comes from tension. Groundrules and boundaries confine those who would play, but the best find ways to exploit their strictures, and just as the daring base runner takes second on a fly to right, the practiced poet trips the sleepy reader with a surprise rhyme, bold line break, or a jarring reversal of foot. It's no surprise, then, that hardball has a larger body of literature than other sports, or that aficionados are more likely than others to quote lines of verse in support of the game they love. This is Tim Peeler's second book of poems from baseball. It contains some of his most moving and best-crafted poetry. Starting with time-honored themes--fathers and sons, baseball and time, memory and the nation, team and player and loyalty--the poet adapts the universal to the local and personal, proving that baseball, with its easy accommodation of reflection, remains a powerful tool for mining our individual and collective history.
