Pitchfork Country: The Photography of Bob Moorhouse showcases the beautiful, almost mystical photos taken by the vice president and general manager of the historic Pitchfork Ranch in Guthrie, Texas. Moorhouse's photographic work reflects his trademark style and traditional western subjects that create the illusion of scenes from a bygone era. As a working cowboy who carries his camera sometimes twenty to thirty miles a day on horseback, Moorhouse has been able to record moments in the field few photographers will ever see. With an appreciation for great light and its selected application to the subject, his photographic images are an accurate portrayal of ranch life. Viewed in future years with the work of Erwin E. Smith, Ray Rector, and others who have photographed ranch life of the past 150 years, Moorhouse's images will be the standard for documenting ranching in the last quarter of the twentieth century. Also 04 Activeable in a limited edition. Distributed for the National Ranching Heritage Center

Top 40 Democracy written by Eric Weisbard and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-11-27 with History categories.

A capacious and stimulating tour de force of the mainstream music industry that reveals the cultural import of even the most deliberately banal performers and songs. Weisbard finds depths in our culture s shallows as he investigates and articulates the cultural construction of such phenomena as Dolly Parton, Elton John, the Isley Brothers, A&M Records, and the rise of radio populism. He further sheds new light on the upheavals in the music industry over the last fifteen years and the implications of them for the audiences the industry has shaped. Each chapter brings us to see afresh precisely that music and those musicians that have become the most familiar and overexposed, by delving into the minutiae of how pop stars and their music were made and framed for repeated consumption in the era dominated by radio."

A Double Mountain Books classic reissue, this storybook travelogue covers the big ranches of West and South Texas. Williams made many informal excursions to study their history, founders, and owners, picking up facts, folklore, and range gossip along the way. He documents the fifteen largest ranches in Texas and the ways they adapted to changing conditions in the ranching industry. Photographs and maps illustrate the text. Though it never received wide circulation following its publication in 1954, The Big Ranch Country has been recognized as a standard work by ranch historians. J. W. Williams wrote often in books and newspapers about West Texas, and his work is still cited by authors and scholars.

Ella Elgar Bird Dumont written by Ella Elgar Bird Dumont and has been published by University of Texas Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-07-03 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

A crack shot, expert skinner and tanner, seamstress, sculptor, and later writer—a list that only hints at her intelligence and abilities—Ella Elgar Bird Dumont was one of those remarkable women who helped tame the Texas frontier. First married at sixteen to a Texas Ranger, she followed her husband to Comanche Indian country in King County, where they lived in a tepee while participating in the final slaughter of the buffalo. Living off the land until the frontier was opened for ranching, Ella and Tom Bird typified the Old West ideals of self-sufficiency and generosity, with a hesitancy to complain about the hard life in the late 1800s. Yet, in one important way, Ella Dumont was unsuited for life on the frontier. Endowed with an instinctive desire and ability to carve and sculpt, she was largely prevented from pursuing her talents by the responsibilities of marriage and frontier life and later, widowhood with two small children. Even though her second marriage, to Auguste Dumont, made life more comfortable, the realities of her existence still prevented the fulfillment of her artistic longings. Ella Bird Dumont’s memoir is rich with details of the frontier era in Texas, when Indian depredations were still a danger for isolated settlers, where animals ranged close enough to provide dinner and a new pair of gloves, and where sheer existence depended on skill, luck, and the kindness of strangers. The vividness and poignancy of her life, coupled with the wealth of historical material in the editor’s exhaustive notes, make this Texas pioneer’s autobiography a very special book.

The Pitchfork Land and Cattle Company of West Texas had already established a reputation for the high quality of its cattle and horses when D and Mamie Burns arrived on the ranch in 1942. D became the fifth manager of the ranch's vast holdings, and Mamie took over management of the ranch's Big House, including the feeding and entertaining of many guests who arrived there to conduct business or simply unwind. The recipes and reminiscences in Mamie's notes, reproduced in this book, show that she certainly enjoyed setting a bountiful table. Although she tells us, "On the Ranch I cooked more and enjoyed it less than anyone alive, I guess," her recipes, and her comments on the life of the ranch, show her enthusiasm for preparing wonderful food to enjoy with treasured friends, family, and ranch visitors. This book will give you a taste of her special dishes, as well as a glimpse of West Texas ranch life as it was lived by Mamie and D Burns, their cowboys, and other ranch hands.

One of Oprah Daily's 20 Favorite Books of 2021 • Selected as one of Pitchfork's Best Music Books of the Year “One of the best books of its kind in decades.” —The Wall Street Journal An epic achievement and a huge delight, the entire history of popular music over the past fifty years refracted through the big genres that have defined and dominated it: rock, R&B, country, punk, hip-hop, dance music, and pop Kelefa Sanneh, one of the essential voices of our time on music and culture, has made a deep study of how popular music unites and divides us, charting the way genres become communities. In Major Labels, Sanneh distills a career’s worth of knowledge about music and musicians into a brilliant and omnivorous reckoning with popular music—as an art form (actually, a bunch of art forms), as a cultural and economic force, and as a tool that we use to build our identities. He explains the history of slow jams, the genius of Shania Twain, and why rappers are always getting in trouble. Sanneh shows how these genres have been defined by the tension between mainstream and outsider, between authenticity and phoniness, between good and bad, right and wrong. Throughout, race is a powerful touchstone: just as there have always been Black audiences and white audiences, with more or less overlap depending on the moment, there has been Black music and white music, constantly mixing and separating. Sanneh debunks cherished myths, reappraises beloved heroes, and upends familiar ideas of musical greatness, arguing that sometimes, the best popular music isn’t transcendent. Songs express our grudges as well as our hopes, and they are motivated by greed as well as idealism; music is a powerful tool for human connection, but also for human antagonism. This is a book about the music everyone loves, the music everyone hates, and the decades-long argument over which is which. The opposite of a modest proposal, Major Labels pays in full.

This ebook explains Kanye West's rugs to riches story. Kanye's rugs to riches story is an inspirational one to many. As Kanye explained over Twitter, he fell into trouble while trying to attain every creative dream he ever had. Whereas it's easy to laugh at a man who once claimed, ”Yes I am personally rich and I can buy furs and houses for my family,” there is still something familiar in his lament, ”I don't have enough resources to create what I really can…” Some of his fans created a GoFundMe page entitled ”Get Kanye Out of Debt” to help Kanye West recover from his financial woes. However, Kanye's camp rejected the proceedings, which were later redirected to a charitable organization. Nonetheless, he managed to connect the dots and is now a billionaire. He is the richest black man in the history of America so far as I write this book. INTRODUCING Kanye West from $0 to $6.6 Billion..... Translator: Celine Claire PUBLISHER: TEKTIME
