Plínio Salgado covers the life trajectory of the far-right Brazilian political leader between 1895 and 1975. The book initially follows his life from his birth, including political and cultural training and political activities between 1895 and 1930. The focus then shifts to his period as leader of the Brazilian fascist movement between 1932 and 1938, with attention to his performance as a leader, his role within the movement, and in the rise and fall of the Integralist Action. His period of exile in Portugal between 1939 and 1947 is also emphasized, with a special focus on his contacts with the Portuguese radical right and German and Italian agents. The final part addresses his return to Brazil, his efforts to reposition himself politically and his performance as a parliamentarian and supporter of the military coup of 1964. This book will be of interest to researchers of Latin American history, Brazilian history and politics, the transnational far right, and comparative fascism studies.

Plínio Salgado foi uma das figuras mais relevantes da história da direita brasileira no século xx. Nascido em São Bento do Sapucaí (sp) em 1895, foi um importante escritor modernista e político ligado ao Partido Republicano Paulista na década de 1920. Nos anos de 1930, fundou o principal movimento fascista surgido no Brasil, a Ação Integralista Brasileira. Como líder integralista, esteve em primeiro plano na política nacional, até ser derrotado e exilado em Portugal por Getúlio Vargas. No pós-guerra, participou ativamente na política dos anos de 1940 e 1950 e, depois de 1964, tornou-se apoiador do regime militar. Entender a vida de Plínio Salgado é, em boa medida, entender a história do Brasil e do mundo no século xx. Este livro é um exercício biográfico que busca reconstruir a vida de Salgado em sua integridade. Ao contrário da maioria dos textos que trataram de sua vida e obra, ele não se restringe ao período integralista, englobando toda a sua vida e os diferentes papéis que ele desempenhou. Fascism in Brazil analyzes the long and varied history of the Brazilian extreme right. The book examines integralism, the main historical Brazilian fascist ideology represented by Brazilian integralist Action, the largest fascist movement outside Europe. It analyzes the Integralist tradition from its founding in 1932 to the present day. It examines how Brazilian integralist Action began with its leader Plínio Salgado's trip to Fascist Italy, and how the Popular Representation Party developed integralism in the postwar era. The book also explores the support of integralists for the 1964 military coup and the role of integralists in the dictatorship. The contemporary extreme right in Brazil is still inspired by the integralist slogans of the 1930s as they seek to find political space and to demonstrate their strength. Contemporary turning points in neo-integralism were the involvement of neo-fascist groups, including neo-integralists, in the upheavals that culminated in the election of Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, as well as in the attack on the headquarters of comedy group Porta dos Fundos in Rio de Janeiro in 2019. Mas quem foi, ou melhor, quem é San Tiago Dantas? Brilhante e precoce, sem dúvida. Líder estudantil aos dezessete anos, aos vinte editor de jornal e teórico fascista, um ano depois professor de Direito, a seguir prócer integralista e crítico do nazismo; catedrático aos vinte e cinco, fundador de duas faculdades e titular de três cátedras antes dos trinta anos e ainda diretor da Faculdade de Filosofia, no Rio de Janeiro. Um ano depois, em 1942, repudia publicamente o Integralismo, defende a declaração de guerra ao Eixo, propõe a união nacional das forças políticas, reunindo os comunistas inclusive, para afirmação de um regime democrático, e em 1945 elabora parecer firmado por seus colegas professores que nega fundamento jurídico à proposta continuísta do ditador Getúlio Vargas. E, explicitamente, defende substituir a propriedade privada pelo trabalho como núcleo de uma ampla reforma social. A acusação de oportunista não demorou a lhe ser lançada, e será renovada e ampliada dez anos depois. Então, o alvo será o jovem jurisconsulto procurado por grandes empresas nacionais e estrangeiras convertido em banqueiro, que se alia aos trabalhadores ao ingressar no partido que Getúlio criara para abrigá-los; e, no início da década de 1960, ministro do Exterior, recusa-se a sancionar o novo regime cubano e reata relações diplomáticas com a União Soviética. No começo de 1964, depois de no ano anterior tentar controlar, sem êxito, a espiral inflacionária à frente do Ministério da Fazenda, já mortalmente doente, e agônica a República de 1946, tenta sensibilizar as forças partidárias e articulá-las em uma frente ampla de apoio às reformas democráticas para resgatá-las da polarização que já engolfara a política nacional. Em vão: a direita o vê como um trânsfuga, os conservadores como um ingênuo, e a esquerda desacredita os seus propósitos. E sobre essas qualidades inegáveis, sobre a admiração e as controvérsias que se acenderam à sua trajetória, esse homem naturalmente grave e professoral difundia um afeto generoso e franco pela família, vendo nos sobrinhos, sempre próximos, os filhos que não pôde ter, e tendo nos amigos da escola os companheiros inseparáveis de toda a vida.
