This article discusses the question of centre and margin(s). It deciphers the position of the margin in the maps of cities and in Google Earth. It compares the all-absorbing form of the globe with the go between position of cities like Istanbul. How does the transitional nature react to the disappearance of both borders and margins?

The Badlands Of Modernity written by Kevin Hetherington and has been published by Psychology Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997 with Architecture categories.

The Badlands of Modernity offers a wide ranging and original interpretation of modernity as it emerged during the eighteenth century through an analysis of some of the most important social spaces. Drawing on Foucault's analysis of heterotopia, or spaces of alternate ordering, the book argues that modernity originates through an interplay between ideas of utopia and heterotopia and heterotopic spatial practice. The Palais Royal during the French Revolution, the masonic lodge and in its relationship to civil society and the public sphere and the early factories of the Industrial Revolution are all seen as heterotopia in which modern social ordering is developed. Rather than seeing modernity as being defined by a social order, the book argues that we need to take account of the processes and the ambiguous spaces in which they emerge, if we are to understand the character of modern societies. The book uses these historical examples to analyse contemporary questions about modernity and postmodernity, the character of social order and the significance of marginal space in relation to issues of order, transgression and resistance. It will be important reading for sociologists, geographers and social historians as well as anyone who has an interest in modern societies.

Over the past several decades, Americans have grappled with the concern that the more broadly shared financial stability and upward mobility of the post-war era have given way to pervasive, systemic insecurity. Unease over recurring economic crises, ballooning student loan debt, and a shifting social contract of employment, to name a few, have gained widespread attention, as have the potential consequences of these trends for the disparate risks and opportunities that Americans face. While large and growing cross-disciplinary studies elucidate nationwide increases in employment, housing, and income insecurity, questions remain regarding the generalizability of national findings to lower levels of geography. In other words: Americans are struggling—but are they struggling equally everywhere?

Our understanding of this sinister but intimate 'other' draws on a wide range of ideas, from different religious traditions to alternative paths to salvation and self-realisation ...
