To assist school district personnel in planning and developing curriculums, this handbook describes and explains a 10-step process and provides supporting examples, checklists, and references. A brief introduction suggests how to use the handbook. Each of the 10 following sections then presents one step, explains its substeps, and offers a checklist that shows whether a substep is being considered or planned, has been completed, or is not needed. The 10 steps involve (1) identifying or stating a curricular need, (2) developing curricular goals and objectives, (3) planning and organizing resources and identifying constraints, (4) organizing and stating the functions of curriculum committees, (5) establishing the roles and responsibilities of personnel involved, (6) identifying and analyzing new curriculums or programs to meet the curricular need, (7) assessing and selecting the new curriculum, (8) designing the new curriculum, (9) implementing the new curriculum, and (10) evaluating the curriculum. In recent years curriculum design has become a major issue in education. Depending on where the information is coming from, not all curriculums are created equal. The source of new curriculum varies; some districts buy books to guide them in the process, while others by whole programs. The problem with this approach to curricular development is that because the curriculum is necessarily generic and general, it might not fit the state's and district's standards and benchmarks. When curriculum does not match standards and benchmarks, there is little accountability. Understanding by Design (Wiggens and McTighe 1998) is a curriculum development structure that enables teachers to plan curricular units and lesson plans that match the state's standards and the district's benchmarks while also promoting maximum student learning. Understanding by Design is not a program teachers teach, but a process for planning. Teachers who use Understanding by Design will create units and lessons that are meaningful, enhance student learning, and ensures standards and benchmarks are met. While Understanding by Design is used in many school districts, it is not commonly employed in my district and school. To build the use of this "best practices" approach to curricular development in my school, this project involves the development of a strategy and tools for facilitating the development of teacher knowledge and skills associated wtih the Understanding by Design model in my school. Specifically, the project involved the development of a set a website to use during in-service professional development sessions with the faculty of my school during the 2010-2011 school year.
