Shaping The College Curriculum written by Lisa R. Lattuca and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-01-11 with Education categories.

Shaping the College Curriculum focuses on curriculum development as an important decision-making process in colleges and universities. The authors define curriculum as an academic plan developed in a historical, social, and political context. They identify eight curricular elements that are addressed, intentionally or unintentionally, in developing all college courses and programs. By exploring the interaction of these elements in context they use the academic plan model to clarify the processes of course and program planning, enabling instructors and administrators to ask crucial questions about improving teaching and optimizing student learning. This revised edition continues to stress research-based educational practices. The new edition consolidates and focuses discussion of institutional and sociocultural factors that influence curricular decisions. All chapters have been updated with recent research findings relevant to curriculum leadership, accreditation, assessment, and the influence of academic fields, while two new chapters focus directly on learning research and its implications for instructional practice. A new chapter drawn from research on organizational change provides practical guidance to assist faculty members and administrators who are engaged in extensive program improvements. Streamlined yet still comprehensive and detailed, this revised volume will continue to serve as an invaluable resource for individuals and groups whose work includes planning, designing, delivering, evaluating, and studying curricula in higher education. "This is an extraordinary book that offers not a particular curriculum or structure, but a comprehensive approach for thinking about the curriculum, ensuring that important considerations are not overlooked in its revision or development, and increasing the likelihood that students will learn and develop in ways institutions hope they will. The book brings coherence and intention to what is typically an unstructured, haphazard, and only partially rational process guided more by beliefs than by empirically grounded, substantive information. Lattuca and Stark present their material in ways that are accessible and applicable across planning levels (course, program, department, and institution), local settings, and academic disciplines. It's an admirable and informative marriage of scholarship and practice, and an insightful guide to both. Anyone who cares seriously about how we can make our colleges and universities more educationally effective should read this book." —Patrick T. Terenzini, distinguished professor and senior scientist, Center for the Study of Higher Education, The Pennsylvania State University

When teachers and students are both engaged in the educational enterprise, every day has the potential to be transformative. The text first discusses Perceptive Teaching: the belief that teachers must know themselves and their students while cultivating culturally sensitive, safe, and inviting spaces for learning for all students. Next, five unique approaches to lesson planning are explored: behaviorist, constructivist, aesthetic, ecological, and integrated social–emotional learning. Each chapter provides the rationale for the approach, its theoretical background, practical applications, and critiques and considerations. Chapters end with a sample lesson that can be compared across approaches. Book Features: A comprehensive examination of multiple approaches to lesson planning. Guidance for teachers on when to choose various approaches, as well as how they might mix and match and blend ideas. User-friendly lesson plan templates, sample lessons, and discussion questions. An appendix with lesson plan examples written by practicing teachers across content areas and age groups.

To assist school district personnel in planning and developing curriculums, this handbook describes and explains a 10-step process and provides supporting examples, checklists, and references. A brief introduction suggests how to use the handbook. Each of the 10 following sections then presents one step, explains its substeps, and offers a checklist that shows whether a substep is being considered or planned, has been completed, or is not needed. The 10 steps involve (1) identifying or stating a curricular need, (2) developing curricular goals and objectives, (3) planning and organizing resources and identifying constraints, (4) organizing and stating the functions of curriculum committees, (5) establishing the roles and responsibilities of personnel involved, (6) identifying and analyzing new curriculums or programs to meet the curricular need, (7) assessing and selecting the new curriculum, (8) designing the new curriculum, (9) implementing the new curriculum, and (10) evaluating the curriculum. Five appendices offer checklists for developing curriculum guides and evaluating textbooks, provide a sample curriculum unit, and present simulations of a reading program assessment and the selection of a computer using the 10-step process. Using Understanding By Design To Plan Effective Curriculum written by Tara Perry and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010 with Curriculum change categories.

In recent years curriculum design has become a major issue in education. Depending on where the information is coming from, not all curriculums are created equal. The source of new curriculum varies; some districts buy books to guide them in the process, while others by whole programs. The problem with this approach to curricular development is that because the curriculum is necessarily generic and general, it might not fit the state's and district's standards and benchmarks. When curriculum does not match standards and benchmarks, there is little accountability. Understanding by Design (Wiggens and McTighe 1998) is a curriculum development structure that enables teachers to plan curricular units and lesson plans that match the state's standards and the district's benchmarks while also promoting maximum student learning. Understanding by Design is not a program teachers teach, but a process for planning. Teachers who use Understanding by Design will create units and lessons that are meaningful, enhance student learning, and ensures standards and benchmarks are met. While Understanding by Design is used in many school districts, it is not commonly employed in my district and school. To build the use of this "best practices" approach to curricular development in my school, this project involves the development of a strategy and tools for facilitating the development of teacher knowledge and skills associated wtih the Understanding by Design model in my school. Specifically, the project involved the development of a set a website to use during in-service professional development sessions with the faculty of my school during the 2010-2011 school year.

Learn how to connect your curriculum planning to children's interests and thinking. With this book, educators will discover a systematic way for using documentation to design curriculum that emerges from children's inquiries, what they wonder, and what they want to understand. Get strategies for designing a classroom environment at the start of the year to facilitate emergent inquiry curriculum. Each chapter guides teachers to document and reflect on their thinking through each of the five phases of a cycle of inquiry process, including observing, interpreting the meaning of the play they see, and developing questions to engage children.
